You need to use at least 91 octane. The manual for the car specifies that these cars need premium. There is a section in the FAQ's that explains why in more detail.

oem suggests 91. i dont have 91 here so i use 93. take care of your cars, put in what the manufacture suggests.

You can get away with using 87 but your performance will decrease. I stick to 93.

Yeah, I got banned for a week or two for advocating 87. Even the manual says you can use it as long as you do not get a knock. It goes on to say that region to region and gasoline brands might be different, so you can check around for some good 87, if you don't find it just put some octane booster in your car.

My knock sensor went out at about 200,000 miles and I used 87 for about 50,000 miles and the car now has 250,000 miles with no signs of damage. Recently I have been switching around with 87 and above but not lately.

I only use 91 octane. I put 87 in my previous 98 Maxima and it ran like crap. Horrible gas mileage (filled up twice a week) which I can only guess came as a result of the 87 (ruined knock sensor?), although I'm no mechanic so I can't say for sure. Putting the 91 in my new Maxima, I fill up every 10 days and I think the performance is better.

91+ for me, and about the octane booster and all of the fuel additives, i had a friend that put all that crap in his jetta and ended up stalling in the middle of the highway because his fuel filter or something clogged up. the mechanic says its because of additives, but it could be just because it was a jetta! but....91+ for me

I've used 87 for the past 4 years. I've put more than 30,000 miles on it with that gas.

You will loose ponies if you do not go with the recommended grade, it is recommended for a reason. Just like the NGK plugs, they are recommended for a reason (people have had issues with other less expensive plugs, and in they ended up putting the recommended plugs in - go with copper if you want to save cash). There was a thread a while back where someone put their car on the dyno and they lost quite a few ponies from going down to 87 octane.

Why would you put something in your car that will hurt its performance ? What is the purpose of adding/spending money on mods if you will be putting this lower grade of gas in ?

Amen brother!! I put 87 in one time and won't do it again, might as well get a honda because it performed like one. The lowest I go is 89 and I only do that when short on cash, 95% of the time I'm running 93 and the max loves it.

I've been using 89 since i got the car about 2 years ago. Nothing going wrong at all. Power is there and mileage is great. Maybe i should try 91 sometime to see if i get better mileage.

my max performs just as good on 87 as it does when i use 91. i dont notice any difference, and i get great mpg either way. more expensive gas, is just, well, more expensive. i personally think its a mind over matter thing, ppl gotta buy the most expensive thing for there ride all the time becuz they think that more expensive is always better. it usually is, but i wouldnt say it is in this case.

Since when does knocking kill the KS? You can run any octane you want and it doesn't really matter for the KS. If it doesn't ping, who cares.

why bother wasting money on cam2 theres no point unless your boosted. put in 91 or 93. treat your car how u want to be treated. would u want ur car to feed u dog food or filet mignon?

By that analogy, I am planning on feeding my car filet mignon flavored dog food since the gas prices are going up 14 cents each gallon!!!!

I use Shell 93. My manual reads 91+ But, why would 87 oct. ruin the KS? If the KS job is to detect detonation, why would this hurt KS? Maybe the pistons/cylinders? NO?

Nothing but 93 since I bought it. We don't have 91 around here. The $1-2 dollar savings on a 10 gallon purchase isn't enough to make me switch to a grade that's only "acceptable" for my car.

"For maximum performance use premium unleaded fuel" means exactly that. I don't think Nissan put that statement on the gas cap for the he-ll of it.
