my comparison:OEM pads vs. axxis ultimate(junk)pads, OEM pads are the way to go..
ok well im gonna try and make this short and sweet...about 3 months ago I bought all new rotors and pads-4 brembo blanks, 4 axxis ultimates...so after I put them in I was pretty happy to have all new brakes...I followed all the proper break in directions for the pads...well after about 2 days, the front pads started really squeaking and for the last few months they are consistently noisy..it gets very annoying at times, not only are they noisy but the MAIN reason why I changed them is because they dusted an INSANE amount..I would wash my car and 2 days later they were GUNMETAL color,im not joking, I like to keep my car nice and clean all the time, this was nearly impossible having the ultimates on my car...next-I will admit that the first 3 weeks, my braking was quite amazing, it would stop pretty damn fast, I dont know if this is because my old brakes were all worn out or because I had all new rotors and pads or because of the axxis pads....but after 3 weeks it started to decrease in stopping power...it would still stop good but it just didnt feel like it did the first 3 weeks....
after the install, I was looking at the ultimate pads...theres an integrated shim on the pad, and it was actually starting to seperate from the pad..you could push through it and it was very mushy and the back of the pad was just very sloppy feeling....so ive got the OEM pads in and not even a peep!!...not even one "screech!"...they are so quiet and here is the kicker!!!-they brake just as well as the axxis pads....almost no dust and what a relief because I can admire my car without having to look at those filthy rims anymore...ive allready driven close to 150 miles and theres pretty much no dust and the braking feels very good...im really surprised that there is no noise.....
in conclusion: axxis ultimates:90$ noisy, VERY DUSTY, poorly constructed
OEM pads:$70 quiet, minimal dust, nice pads

I have Axxis Ultimates with Brembo Rotors slotted..they have only been about 1000 miles and I love them..I have 18" aftermarket rims and they really dont dust alot. some dust on the Inner wheel but nothing really out of the ordinary...PADS WILL DUST, its a comman fact... the first say 200 miles they dusted alot due to breaking in and all, but not there not dusting all that much.
I wish I had gotten a BBK for the fronts cause when these do heat up with alot of breaking I do get some Break Fade but ALOT less then what I used to have..my stock rotors were gone

my MM took forever to warm up....in the morning it was dangerous sometimes, they made groaning sounds all the time, horrible dusting even though people say they dont. Went back to stock fronts for 40 bucks and the noise is gone.....brakes felt slightly more spongier if thats a word but a whole lot better. i also ate through a set in 6 months and im on almost 2 years now for the oems

I also tossed my Metal Masters because of noise and a lack of initial bite.
You guys should try the TRW Semi Metalic pads, talk about grabby brakes.
TRW also makes a line of Ceramic pads that have little to no dust, with a trade of a bit less initial bite, but nothing like the MM.

Are Axxis Ultimates the same thing as Metal Masters?
Jason recommended them to me and hence I got them from his GD. Now we have the OP here claiming they are noisy and dust a lot but I have seen literally hundereds of folks buy them from AutoMax's GDs. So, what's the real deal here?
Thanks

I'm planning on buying some new (either slotted and drilled or just slotted) rotors and new brake pads so i was wondering what everyone would recommend. I saw the one thread about upgrading the brakes to 13" cobra's or whatever but i don't want to do anything that drastic. I just want to get some better stopping power out of the stock setup for my 98 maxima. If anyone could make some recommendations on rotors/pads then that would be great!
all i know is unless scca don't bother w/ slotted/drilled. you'll have a tendency to eat ur pads and waste your money.
im looking at OEM replacements, or brembo (was told they rust). i really dk what brands out there are coated to not rust. anyhow..
i'll just install my MM, i bought them anyhows and on advice from many here as well as the link. i dont care bout dust, but i care bought noise and pad life, but we'll see..

I Installed Aug. 2004 , Brembo/cross Drilled Slotted Rotors, On My 1998 Max S.e.--, With Axxis Brake Metal Master Pads. 1st Three Week, Noticed A Fine Line Cut In L/frt. Rotor. Took Back To Service Ctr. And Was Told, New Brake Hoses, Frt. And Rear Would Resolve. 2 Months Ago, Same Rotor Now Has A Lazer Like Cut Gouge Into The Same Rotor And Grinds Hard On Braking. Took Back To Same Ctr. , And Told, Recommended All New Brake Calipers ??? Took Car To 45 Yr. Expereinced Alignment Ctr., Told Rotors And Calipers Spin Freely, On Lift. Told, Caliper's O.k.?? But Showed Me Right Side ROTOR ALSO Cutting Away , Also. Live In S.n. Jersey, And Get Different Opinions. Phoned Brembo Brake Co.--upset. Told Co.'s Selling Their Blank Cross Drill Rotors And Slot Cutting Them On Their Own. Told, They Only Sell Cross Drill, Or Slotted Only. I Got New Cross Drill Brembo Rotor's. Any Brake Pad Or Suggestions For Future Install.[s]

hey bro do yourself a favor and dont put those axxis pads on...seriously, ive done extensive brake research and have experience with the axxis pads...some people say that there axxis pads dont dust that much, well, lol...my rims got dirty so fast, it was rediculous, i mean my rims were COATED in brake dust, the inside, the outside of the rim became FILTHY in days.....
your best bet bro: brembo blanks-great rotors and they are cheap, and the match them with the OEM pads...you said your oem's squeak? .. well im guessing that you dont have any shims on the pads...or they are worn out....go to nissan and get the pads and skim kit and I can almost guarantee you you wont have any noise..I didnt use any quiet stop brake lube at all...all I was put the shims on and I havent had a single peep yet out of the brakes and I love how well it brakes ... good luck, any ?'s pm me ... but dont even waste your time with those mm
when you say OEM pads, you get them from the stealership? I've been using autozone/advance (duralast?) pads with minimal complaints, but now i'm curious if dealer pads offer any more stopping power....

what do i do then? i mean who's gonna buy theM. it's too late now.. i bought them already w/o knowing
sigh
. nissan dealers really suck and rape me, regardless of what brand, even the honda dealers rape me. are you saying i need new shims? i am wanting to do work on my brakes, yet i am afraid of over spending. my rotors seem okay, but i jsut want to lube pins back up and do the brakes.
i dont think i need rotors, but i'd like to get new pads, i bought the car not knowing what pads they were, so i am assuming OEM. i have 65k, 97 max and so exactly what do u guys think would need replacing? i dont wanan make extensive trips to the dealer, so i wanna order all at once.

well im sure you could seel your mm in the classified section, you may not get as much as you paid for them but a little less wouldnt hurt....
you can get 4 new brembo blank rotors from automax in the GD section for 150 shipped which is dang good!, that is if you need rotors... then just go to the dealership and pick up some pads....the price for pads at a dealership isnt bad at all, mine were 65 without the shimms, I think the shimms were like 20, this is all for the front brakes only, not the back...I do all my brake work myself....dont ever go have work done at the dealership, they rape you on labor

yes i know. i will get shims. and i might as well just f* it and pick up some OEM pads.
i'll see though, so shims are like 20 bucks for the front? do u think im due for some? or will just doing it not hurt? anyhow thanks... im gonan try sell my MM and call dealer, if price is TOO big, i'll just stick w/ mm cuz i live in hawaii and etc.
thanks.

OEM pads are great. However, most of the time, you have to buy the brake shim kit because your existing metal backing on the pads have rusted out or will do so during the life of your new pads. The only other pad that is close to OEM in performance and minimal noise and dust are Raybestos Quietstop QS premium pads. The work great and have the metal backing already on there. Just get some CRC Brake Disc Quiet goop to put on the backing and you are ready to go.
Just make sure you relube the caliper pins and replace any one that is rusted out or has a damaged boot--they are often a cause of sticking calipers and you can ruin a new set of rotors/pads in no time.

... no pun intended ... I wasted my money on them too....my rims were always dirty, it was horrible....WHAT A FERAKING RELIEF to have no dust and quiet brakes....oem is awesome
You guys DO know that the Axxis MMs are NOT designed for low temp applications right?? So they won't perform well when cold but perform well when warm/hot. The oem pads will perform well when cold but will perform worse (relatively) when hot.
It's a trade off. It just depends on what you need/want/prefer. One must know the product's application before blindly bashing it.

I was pleased with the all around performance of the Ultimates, but the rotor wear and dust was unacceptable for me.
It's very hard to have a pad that does it all. Especially with the dinky rotors the maximas have. Aggressive, hard biting pads that perform well hot, will tend to eat up rotors. Pads that are rotor friendly and don't dust, tend not to perform well.
I have cheap pads on my bbk and I'm very happy though. I got it all.

Can someone explain the shim kit thing, is it just the shims itself? does anyone have the parts number? or are you saying that only OEM needs shims? I am pretty sure, I will get new shims, but i dont wanna buy a kit just for those shims and have other stuff with it???.
anyhow there are 3 diff't grades of axxis/pbr pads. so all 3 grades suck??
when u guys mean hot, do you guys mean temperature of driving factoring environmental weather? i would think that a lot of stop and go with the brakes will be beneficial to aftermarket, or long durations of driving...

so where do i put the grease? behind shims? or back of pad(inbeteween shims)?
To those that complain about brake dust, I recommend you get a BBK or just stick with stock pads. You can't get the best of both worlds.
Any pad thats performs well in repeated high speed stops WILL dust more than average, be noiser, and will perform poorly until warmed up. Thats the price you pay for performance pads.
In addition, slotted or/and cross-drilled rotors serve no purpose except asthetics on a street car, they are actually worse than blanks.
I have Porterfield R4S on Brembo blanks, they are an improvement in stopping power over the stock brakes, but again due to the small size of our stock front rotors, they will never come close in stopping power to a BBK.
