Replacing the rear oil seal

The Factory service manual (FSM) says you need to remove the oil pan to do this. Is this really necessary? Can you replace it without removing the pan? Also do I need to use a liquid gasket like brought out in the FSM? Thanks

To replace the rear main oil seal retainer (the metal part)...NO

To replace the rear oil pan seal that sits below the rear main oil seal retainer (the c shaped rubber seal)...MAYBE. It has been done with out removing the pan, but it can be a b!tch. Just ask DR-Max.

Put liquid gasket on both...YES! ALWAYS YES!!
