1157 File Down Method
#1
Hey, I've tried filing down the 1157 bulbs in order to get a "whiter" look in my clearence lenses. I've noticed though since both filaments are being lit, the blub gets really hot compared to the stock way the bulb runs. Has anyone expierenced melting and or problems with these modified bulbs. Please let me know. For now I took them out. If you have any other suggestions for modifying the clearence lenses post that also. Thanks....

That's a good question. I asked this same one about a month ago when I performed this operation on my Polargs. Yes, they get hot but I havent had any problems THUS far. My most rigorous test was when I was driving back home from school at night about a week ago. The drive was a 4 hour trip from Blacksburg, VA to DC and I didnt notice the bulbs giving off any more heat than usual.
Im still crossing my fingers cause they look so cool.

hey, has anyone ever tried filing a Polarg M-12 1157 35/5w bulb? Were there any problems with the lense cracking from the heat? Also, all you have to do is file the little metal **** on the side of the bulb, right? Does this method work on the 95-96 Maximas? If so, what is the result on the the 95-96 Maximas? Does the 35 watt filament kick in when the parking lamps/headlamps are on? What if you use a turn signal when headlamps are on? Will it only use a 5 watt filament and not the 35 watt filament? I'm confused! Someone please clarify this! Thanks!

Ok, on the socket the bulb goes into you are supposed to insert the bulb with the high node fitting into the slot on the socket where it only goes down a little bit and the low node goes to the slot on the socket that goes down further. If you were installing it as normal, you would just insert the bulb the way I mentioned in the above sentence and then twist the bulb so it locks in place.
When you file off the top node on the bulb (file so it is just about flush) all you need to do to keep both filaments on (thus brighter) is insert the bulb in the socket backwards. I.E. Insert the the bulb so now the side of the bulb where the higher node used to be fits in the slot on the socket where the lower node is supposed to go. When you twist, the lock wont be as strong, but you can stick a bit of duct tape around the bulb to make it more firm.
Good Luck.
