Stuff to check

Im looking to buy a 97-99 Maxima around 80k miles in the next week or so hopefully. I have got some good knowlege of the Max, but what are some things I should check when buying it. I dont want to buy it then drop a grand on repairs like i did for my last max (Breaks and CV's)

CEL, and check for ghost codes
CV joints
Coils on the 99
Struts
Overall smooth running

Anything else i should be specifically checking? I am not going to take it to a mechanic so everything on this list im hoping to be able to learn how to check each.

Are you looking for an automatic or a 5-speed? The 5-speeds sometimes have a differential bearing problem, but I think the incidence is higher in 95/96s.

Check the brakes to see what shape they are in. Seized rear calipers are sometimes a problem.

Try to get the maintenance history for the vehicle.

Check when the fluids were last changed: radiator coolant, brakes flushed, transmission drained and filled or flushed, power steering fluid replaced, transaxle gear oil changed if a 5-speed.

Determine when fuel filter was last replaced.

With the mileage you are seeking, the car should be good to go apart from the brakes.

If the caliper is seized you generally can't turn the tire by hand. Inquire of the owner about the condition of the brakes. Take the wheels off and look at the condition of the rotors and how dirty the brake calipers are. You could even open up the calipers and inspect the brake pads.

Compression check will tell you a lot about the engine life. If they will let you take the car to get it checkedout, Most Nissan dealerships do a free 100point inspection.

I can't imagine a stealership to do a 100 point inspection for free. Most of them would charge you if you asked them what time it was!

My dealership (Gwinnet Place Nissan) did a extensive inspection of my car, I dont know if I was getting hooked up or what but they checked my car, pulled codes for me (2) KS and Crankshaft sensor, saw my axle needed replacing, and my clutch was badly in need of a change, printed up a list and how much it would cost and I went on my way, didnt pay a dime.

Just call your dealer its free to call and ask

Tell them you have a Maxima that you would like them to do an inspection on to verify its current condition, ask if they have a free inspection or how much for a 50 point inspection lets say, they'll let you know.

With the car running for a while look under the car for anti-freeze or oil leaks while engine is running.
