brakes grinding question

I recently installed new brake pads in the front. I lost one of the metal springs that go into the holes on the side of the brake pad, so I only installed 1 of those springs on the drivers side.

Now I am getting a grinding sound when pressing the brake hard, going ~10 mph. Is it a problem to only have one of these springs installed?

They are the ones that pull the brakepads apart when you are not brakeing. Thanks for any info.

Nope - the grinding won't be caused by the missing spring... you might have something stuck between the pad and the rotor...

Those metal spring clips aren't really needed.

Did you remove, clean, and regrease the slider pins on the calipers?

One of them could be rusted and need replacing.

The brackets on top and bottom where the pads slide in should be cleaned and greased a bit as well.

Also make sure one of the pads isn't stuck at an odd angle on the top or bottom bracket.

Thanks for the replies, yeah I did everything that JPMax said, except I had to get new slider pins from Autozone because I broke off one of the caliper bolts. I greased those pretty well.

Do you guys happen to know what the torque is for tightening those caliper bolts?

According to the FSM 22-31 for the bolts that go into the sliding pins.

Greased what? The caliper pins? I don't think its possible to overgrease them, so just put a nice layer on there.

Also, I didn't grease the brackets that the pads slide in, I just cleaned them with brake cleaner.

I think you can overgrease them. If you pack too much grease in, I don't think there will be enough freespace for the pin to move freely - try it and you'll see what I mean - it almost jams the pin into place.

Put the pin back in and get the rubber boot set around both sides.
Pull the pin outward as far as the rubber lets you and let go.
The pin should slowly slide back in all by itself.

Ok I have another question. On the front left rotor, I see that there is rust on the outside edge of it, but not closer to the center. So it seems like the pads are only touching the rotor closer to the center.

I am also getting a popping sound when I'm backing up and I press the brakes. I don't get that sound while braking going forward.

The only other thing I can think of is that I bought new caliper pins from Autozone, and it seemed like they were slightly longer than the stock ones. Any other ideas? Thanks.
