faulty knock sensor

i have a faulty knock sensor on my 97 auto maxima and was wondering what kind of speed and power would be lacking if it wasnt replaced and does it need to be changed imediately. Also does anyoune know where to find cheap oem knock sensors because my mechanic is charging me $360 + tax for the parts and labor. Thanks

or you could browse ebay and buy it for $95 or $99 shipped. and then get in contact with someone in your area from the org who will probably install it for $40~$60. most you could pay is 160 which is $200 less than that ripoff mechanic. it may take a bit of work on your part, but it's worth it to save that kind of money.

I did mine tonight. I simply put a ratchet on the bolt holding it on and loosened it. It only moved one click on the ratchet each time but once it was loose I stuck my hand down there and removed the bolt with my fingers. Not sure if this helps but I stood on the drivers' side (of course) toward the front corner and used my LEFT hand to do it. My right hand would get all bound up. I got it done without a scratch, took me 20 minutes, just because the car wasn't completely cool and touching the plenum wasn't comfortable at all. I just ordered mine, was 86.50 shipped, some deal going on from a dealer I saw on the org. Nothing to it. 12mm bolt holds it in. Not sure about the power gain, I hear it's noticable. I reset my ecu but they say it can take a few miles for the computer to adjust the settings once it knows the sensor is working. You have to reset the ECU.
