Y pipe install

Well i just recieved my y pipe from custom maxima for $199 shipped from the GD. Well i am going install this myself at work next week but i remember that people where saying go to a mechanic and have them replace the bolts on the cat. Well i went to 2 places today and one said they couldnt install the y pipe but for the new bolts i was looking at $75 and down the street said it would be about 150 fo the install they wouldnt do just the bolts. So when i lift it at work next week i guess ill just have to heat up the bolts before they will come off. Anyother things that i should plane inadvance for this install, and about how long does it take. I have read alot of the instructions in the stickies and other places doesnt seem too hard. Thanks Tom

It's just those bolts that were going to give you trouble. Monroe Muffler replaced the two bolts connecting y-pipe to cat this morning for $20. I had to remove those bolts so that I can install my STS, now I'm just waiting for the car to cool down.

If you have access to an industrial lift and tools, why were you going to pay someone to remove them? I just don't have the resources to do what they did this morning, which by the way, is very cool to watch IMO.

I too am curious, my budget Y is arriving and I have my mechanic putting it in, looking for a good write up. The stickies have one post, but it is brief. Does anyone have a more comprehensive write up? Is it neccesary? I was hoping to see info on exhaust wrap and hanger fastening...

What are you concerned about, your mechanic can figure it out in 2 seconds. Forget about exhaust wrap. First of all you don't need it for a Budget y, secondly it leads to corrosion, rust and premature failure of the product and is intended for race-car applications.

It should be no more than 1.0 to 1.25 hours labor at whatever the going rate is.

i think u should save your money and do it yourself b/c its not that hard. i did the ypipe install myself with a buddy and the only problem i had was getting under the car and getting leverage to take off the bolts. all u need is wd40 or some kind of greaser to losen the bolts and you'll be fine. it took me like 2.5 hours cause i kept takin breaks, hope all goes well

yea, get a breaker bar or torque bar. same thing. personally i also have a 15 galon compressor n hardly use that. its a pain in the butt to have to lug it out and wait for the compressor to fill it up with air. the torque bar is great. i only recommend using an air gun when you know there's a lot of bolts to be taken off n only making sure you can get to them

Geez, when I replaced mine I used a fire wrench (torch) and they came right off.
Nothing like torching off those bolts. In any case I removed the bolts and
then took out the studs that were in the cat. I put in two new 9/16th
bolts and away I went. Rust is a real ***** on the old ones.

You can try using a mapp torch but that will take awhile to get it to
glow the way you would want. Forget about a propane torch.

If you have to, you can always drill out the old bolts/studs too. ( start with a small hole and go a few sizes up) After about 30min you should be done.

The installation can get no easier it is just the amount of rust that has built up and the components that will dictate difficulty/time

I had to have 3 bolts TORCHED OFF of my car for my y-pipe install. Of course, that was after 9 years of NY winters! They were fused on. Heating them didn't work. Air-tools were useless.

If you are lucky, you will get them off no problem.

Just get under your car and test the bolts. You don't need to wait for the y-pipe to see if you can do this yourself. If you can turn them, you know you are good for the install.

Press the "New Thread" button when on the main "4th Generation" forum. It should work fine.

you cant make a new thread because you must have a post count of 15 befor posting a new thread due to the amount of spam we were getting because of the fact you used to be able to post a new thread as soon as you registerd

i think the hardest part of the y-pipe install was removing the bolts on the first bend of the original y pipe. i think a lot of people used a special extension to get to it. best of luck to you though.

If you are in an area of the country where things tend to rust, and you plan to keep your car for a long, long time, get a stainless steel y-pipe. If you don't worry about rust or don't plan on keeping your car more than 5+ more years you can save a small amount of money by getting aluminized. Stainless is better though, and the price difference isn't tremendous (we're talking $40 here).

The main brands for y-pipes are:

-Budget (a Canadian Company)

-Warpspeed

-Cattman

-Custom Maxima (less well known, but sounds like a good product)

There have been 1,000 arguments about which company is better. Personally, I think they are all pretty much the same dam thing. You get a 2 1/2" pipe with no pre-cats. This frees up your exhaust and you get your power. They all do this.

Now: Let the traditional "flame-war-of-the-y-pipe-brands" begin again! Because that's what happens everytime a newbie asks which brand is better! ha ha. People on here are so predictably combatative. Maybe they'll layoff this one? We will see.

Wow, that's a little off-topic, like the last post, but to be quick: 1) Getting a high-flow cat won't increase your HP at all. I got mine with an exhaust group deal and only because it was dirt cheap and came with the other exhaust pieces. I would never have bought it on it's own. 2) Nope, no need to drill any holes. 3) My personal advice: don't bother with the high-flow cat. It's a waste of money. But hey, if it makes you feel good to know it's under there, do as you please and buy one. There not that expensive anyway.

Good luck, whatever you decide.
