Uh oh... Bad Engine!

Well... just found out i got a blown headgasket which is leaking engine coolant into my cylinders makin my exhaust white... Got a bad engine mount and a blown fuse going into the gauge pod. Anyone got any ideas on what to do... Just get the parts i need or go with a new engine... I dont plan on having this car for much longer.

New engine. Get a 00engine. It will be more work but worth it and much cheaper then swapping a 3.5L engine.

Or if you dont want any problems, just swap the same engine in. Our engines are fairly cheap so it will be the best option for you.

You could either get a 3.5 swap or just get rid of the car now. I really don't know, but I wish I had a reason to get a 3.5 swap.

How so? The VQ35DE swap can be done for about 1100-1200$ if you put just the engine with no other mods. How is the 00 swap "much cheaper"? The 00 VI is also a ***** to get to work on the 4th gen, while the 02 IM is very simple.

All you need is a RPM switch to make it work.

How much are cam spacers and how much does tilley charge to drill cams?

130$ shipped for cams drilling and spacers + 750 to 900 for the engine. It is wise to do headers and motor mounts too, but that is not necessary.

I wouldn't try selling the car with a bad engine. You will mostly have people trying to steal it from you for a low-ball price. Of course, you could always put an ad in the paper and find out what you can get.

On the plus side, I've seen working VQ engines sold for ridiculously cheap. The labor costs of getting the swap done is where the real money will be spent.

Anyone know how much the labor usually is for an engine swap (w/o going to 3.5L)? Cost to fix blown headgasket? I think that will make your decision for you.

just replace the head gasket. when you take the heads off, check which one is the cleanest cylinder. thats where the head gasket was leaking. nothing like steam cleaning your engine!!

If you just want to dump it, they do make sealers that can temporarity fix leaks in the head gaskets. GM made an AWSOME one a number of years ago for the caddy 4100 series engines (those cars had MAJOR head gasket problems) Really its the same problem just a different engine. The right way is just to replace the gasket.

Just a thought.

So the 02vi is easier to install on a vq30? What are the gains?

Its just easier to wire in the 02vi, I don't think the power gains are better.

Hey i got a 4.5 litre caddy engine in the allante (the 87-88s had the 4.1) but honestly ive never heard of a headgasket problem on these cars, Although everyone who knows what there doing uses the GM pellets when the do a coolant change. It may have been a larger problem for other caddies witht these engines, the allante was a little different from the rest of the line with its handbuilt engine and all.
