96 Speed Sensor

Has anyone else has their ECU throw code 0104 - Vehicle Speed Sensor? I need to get inspection done and the ECU is throwing this code, I can reset it but it comes back after about 50-100 miles. Should I be able to pass ODB-II inspection if I reset, drive for a couple miles, then bring it in? If someone has replaced it do you have any pointers?

The speed sensor code will come back if you reset it or not. Best thing to do it is to have it replace. I had the same problem like yours. I think the part from the stealership is around $50. Get a mechanic and have it replace.

I didn't know where the speed sensor were located, so I had my mechanic change it for me. You need to jackup the car to change it. You can't visually see the sensor from the bottom of the car, but you can see it from the top. The intake tube needs to be remove to see it. My mechanic had to feel where the sensor is located from the bottom. Good luck.

If you reset the ECU it takes awhile for it to run all it's tests. The inspection stations computer will show that these tests are pending and they'll reject you. I have a speed sensor that came out at 105k and was working fine that I'll sell you if you want...just name a price.

:edit: Mines a 5spd...I guess I'm not sure if they're the same.

Easy replacement

You can replace it quite easily from the top of the engine. I did mine (10 min), only problem.... my CEL came right back. After some wire tracing from the manual, everything checked out.

I talked to a Nissan tech and he said "speedo head" So I got a used one and reset the light and all is well. BTW- i was having cruise control probs, where it wouldnt set, once I replaced the sensor, the cruise only worked once in a while. After the speedo head replacement, the cruise works all the time.

bumped up a very old thread but I am having a similar problem.

Originally my check engine light came on and the codes indicated the knock and speed sensor.

I had the speed sensor replaced....and my mechanic reset my car.

About 500miles later my check engine light came on and it is saying knock senor and sensor. If i replace the knock sensor will that take care of the speed sensor code..because its beeen replaced already.

I have a 97 maxima gle btw..

So have you not checked the wiring, or the screw behind the cluster yet?

Search would've shown those.

No, the knock sensor won't throw a VSS code.

Also, newbie thread is there for a reason. No reason to bump an old *** thread.
