1) I heard that over drive put ur car to 3rd gear. y is it that auto people press it in the begginning of the race?
Is it possible to put into 1, then gear 2, then after its 40 to 60mph ( or whenever 2nd gear end) then PREss the overdrive. sorta like another way of shift manually for auto drivers. would that make the car faster?

2) question: we all know that porsche GT2 has the HUge GTR wing. they claim that it makes the car go faster because of better air flow. However, us at the maxima.org, people say our spoiler or the aftermarket GTR do not help, just for the look, why is that?

The O/D OFF simply locks the automatic transmission out of fourth gear. It limits operation to gears 1, 2, and 3. It doesn't do anything to make the car accelerate faster "off the line". However, if you are cruising at a steady 55 mph with O/D OFF and "punch it" you will accelerate faster because there's no waiting for the tranny to shift down into 3rd. It's already there.

I drive with overdrive off

most of the time, untill I am going around 55-60. Gives a better response and feel when driving (engine slows you down a little more at 40-50mph... gas is touchier b/c it doesnt have to downshift..)

Yes, it would be possible to shift into 1st till 40, then to 2nd until you run it to redline (80mph) and then use 3rd by putting the car into "drive" with the overdrive button sticking out.. I don't remember where you have to shift for 4th, 115 ? I forget

People at the track have said over and over that having overdrive off gives them better times - why ? They would never be shifting into 4th anyway! Whenever (if ever) I do race, I have it off justincase it makes a dif.

OD or 4th gear will not come into play when racing till after about 105mph. At WOT, the car will just downshift and you will not have a choice of what gear your running, unless you manualy shift it. Bad part about this= if your not paying attention and get too caught up in the race, you can throw it in neutral and redline your engine= bad, very bad. I turn OD off at the track, and when I'm driving on slow streets around town. I don't like the car shifting all the time, it bugs me. Below 100mph though, OD won't help you for squat.

2) The wing is more of a downforce thing. The big wing in the back helps keep the car planted to the ground. As air runs under the car, it has a tendency to try and "lift" the car up. A wing counteracts this, and can also help to smooth the airflow as it leaves the car. The air behind the car can create a kinda vacume of turbulent air, that can slightly slow the top speed and acceleration. In the Porche's case, I think it's mostly for traction. More downforce holding the tires to the ground around the turns. I know a guy who used to own a Porche dealership. That is, until he lost control of one on the autobahn and died. Our wing for the Max is too small to make an impact, which is why most say it's worthless. Look cool though

Lucent, OD off around 55 WILL NOT neccasarily make your car faster, per say. I think the only reason he says it will be fast is that your car does not have to downshift TWICE to accelerate. At 55, we are still in the 2nd gear range. From 55 cruising with OD on, if you floor it, the car will have to downshift to 2nd, which it will hold to about 77-80 mph, then it will shift to third. One of the biggest downfalls of the auto tranny is the shift time, which is geared for luxury. This is where the VB mod comes into play, which is supossed to reduce our 1/4 times by about .4-.5, which is quite a lot for an auto. The only thing your really playing with IMO with the OD off is your gas milage. When I'm just cruising around town, I usually leave it off, but if I get up around 50, I turn it back on. UNLESS, I'm looking for a race of course, then I'll leave it off, but at least here in San Diego, at $2.20+ for 92, I try and get the best milage possible.
