Painting the clearance and bumper lights.

Getting ready to AE the headlights using the duplicolor graphite high temp spray color. Also, I am thinking of painting the inside housing of the clearance and bumper lights. I'm not talking about tinting the inside or outside of the lenses. I want to keep them clear. With the dark inner housing behind the clear lense, it should look pretty nice. A big plus would be that it shouldn't affect the light passing thru the lenses. Think of it as the DTM mod on the clearance and bumper lights.

Has anyone done this before? Please post pics if you have.

I painted my bumper lights and the only thing that I didnt like about it is that there is a border around the light that you cant paint. I dont know how to explain it better, but once you open them up and start painting, you will understand what I mean.

I see your sig 2 da max but what I wanted to do is slightly different from yours. Your corner lights are AE'd just like the headlights. I am going to paint all the reflective part of the corner lights. This should give off a dark look eventhough the clear lenses aren't tinted in any way. I'm doing the same thing with the bumpers lights.

Imagine this method used on the corner and bumper lights:

1) the innards are painted

2) look with clear lense over painted innards

I'm doing this same method to the new CE red/clear tails.

Dr. Max,

With your method, you are painting over the reflective chrome finish. So, didn't you just kill the reflectivity of the bulb? Now when you turn, the light will be more focused rather than spread. Yes/no? Just curious. I can't tell a difference as far as looks between your method and the other, it looks really good!

So the original DTM mod was using a translucent smoke paint on the inside of the lense, correct?

Let me know, as I was going to DTM my lights very, very soon. Thanks.

Exactly! I really don't care whether I loose that type of illumination or not. Besides, whether or not I have illuminating corner lights doesn't make a difference to me. I can still see where I'm going when cornering at night with or without it. It's almost like tinting the lense, you loose some of that illumination as well. This mod is totally for looks while retaining marker light functionality. So when the corner lights are on, the light is just focused not reflected onto the surrounding areas. As for paint, the DTM mod used flat black enamel. I am going to use the same graphite enamel that I planned on using for the AE mod. I will also use the same thing when I DTM the new tails.

Just finished with painting the headlights and corners, just letting them dry thoroughly and will be reassembling everything back on the car. I thought I'd show a photo of the innards of the corner lamps painted with graphite.

Test fitting of the clear lense over the painted corner lamp, looks nice!!! Can't wait to see it lit up. Also, I cleaned the insides of the lenses with Mequiar's Glaze - Clear Plastic Detailer. The lenses are nicer and clearer now than before.

That looks great man. Good job

I wonder what it'd look like with diamond cut corners... that should look pretty sick.

The graphite will most likely stand out more. And the diamond edges in the housing will probably be more subtle. I'm still waiting on my new crystal clear red/clear tails and bumper lenses. Once they are painted, my lighting mod project will be complete.

I did not have much problems with the messy glue. What I did was that while I was prying on the corners, I took another screw driver and ran it thru the middle letting the soft glue stretch on to it instead. Thus the glue never got on the reflector at all.

I did the DTM and AE mod...I haven't done anything to my bumpers though. As for my clearance lights I just did them AE style around the edge. I might just black them out eventually though.

Here's a photo showing that DTM'd corners still provide ample of lighting! Driving down the road, the light from the corners still reflects on the road. BTW, my corners are modded to be brighter. The only set back to the whole thing is that I didn't realize how many tiny cracks the corner lenses have because of the mod that makes the bulb shine brighter. I might undo this mod when I get a new set of corners as well.

One bonus that I failed to mention is that if you are using those PolarG bulbs or any of those blue tinted bulbs, they don't show as much in DTM'd corner lights.
