How to paint the brake rotors and calipers: JP's technique
Just did this on Monday in black.
(This works best with a can of paint and a brush.)
Supplies:
- Latex Gloves (or just get your hands dirty and clean em later)
- Masking tape
- Can of high heat paint (black bbq, or the expensive foliatec type stuff)
- 1" brush
- 3 or 4 cans of brake cleaner
- small steel bristle brush
- some cleaning wipes
For Safety purposes, DO THIS ON LEVEL GROUND.
Hint: Do this on a partly sunny day (75-85 degrees) - Humidity is BAD for paint.
Steps:
1. jack up car and place on jack stands
2. take off wheels
3. thoroughly clean brake calipers and rotors
4. remove caliper pistons and carefully position on top of hub (no need to remove brake line)
5. remove brake pads (make sure you remember how they go back in)
6. remove upper and lower metal clips from the caliper bracket (clean them w metal brush and spray)
7. if doing the fronts, pull handbrake and put car in neutral. (so you can turn the rotor as you work)
8. using plenty of little pieces of tape, cover the rotor surface that is shiny. (ie the part that touches the brake pads) Just do the outer facing side.
9. Now you can go to town on painting.
10. Paint the center of the rotor and outside circumference (where it tends to rust)
11. Paint the Caliper piston and bracket
12. it's ok to let the piston dry on top of the dustshield/hub. no one's gonna see an imperfection on the bottom of it.
13. Go have a drink and come back in an hour or two.
14. Remove the tape from the rotor surface. (admire your handywork)
15. Now reassemble the brakes. make sure those metal clips are clean and greased.
16. Double check your reassembly work.
17. Touch up any imperfections you made to the paint while reassembling.
17. Put the wheels back on and stand back. (oooo..beautiful)
18. Go for a nice long ride to cure the paint.
Spray paint: this requires a bit more prep to prevent overspray from getting on parts you don't want. Easiest way is with a cut up garbage bag and tape.
Feel free to add more tips if you got em.

i painted mine black. make sure u use a lotta newspaper and masking tape to mask off areas you don't want to paint. i actually unbolted my calipers when i painted mine, just cuz i needed to change the pads anyway. it's up to you. oh and i would clean the calipers with brake cleaner first. i used a few coats of black high temp engine enamel. you should be good to go.

For the maximum riceness for your painting dollar, I would recommend red.

DING DING DING.
Don't need to show off your painted caliper. A lot of ppl got red and some have even regretted it.
Nah, go Gold. Def. go with Gold. IMO I think it's the nicest, sleekest when you match your calipers with the color of your car. Maybe that's just me, but I think the sh*t would look tough.

I went with a blueish gray. I think it would be cool if you could paint yours the same color as the car. I didn't want black rotors or I would have followed my own advice. I also painted mine on the car. Overspray is removed by your brake pads so I masked what I could but wasn't too worried about overspray.

if i were to paint mine, since i have that maroon color, i was thinking just black. but...it probably would just blend in. bronze and red conflict with maroon man.

red is cool but overplayed.
