Just throwing this out there - symptoms are similar to if your torque lock-up converter is staying engaged. Pull the codes as NMex already suggested.

i am not sure but i will look in the FSM tommarow and pm you. i have the same problem at alt. of 5000 ft up in the mountains here when its cold. in fact the car dies when put in gear. i will look it up and come up with something. its not your trans, its something to do with fuel intake and the throtle body.....

o yeah by the way i got a code that said 2nd gear pressure or something - erased it and it never came back. i think what happend is while surging it freaks out the trans. i just let it warm up before i drive it up there now.

ok so now it is trans maybe. goto autozone if its there and ask for an obd 2 code reader. have them clear the codes and see if they come back. that is what i did and they did not come back. - i still have the problem at alt. and cold mornings up there but i just let it warm up. will pm you now

well, if your tranny fluid looks thin, and has metal shavings in it, it kinda means that you're due for a tranny flush. you can do it yourself by buying like 10 quarts of tranny fluid. i usually fill mine up like 3 times before i'm done. My toyota celica jerked hard while shifting into 2nd, hence i got this car. but when i changed the fluids multiple times, my neighbor said to sample the fluid. meaning each time i change it,put some in a clear water bottle. You will be able to see the difference in the oil, it will get cleaner n cleaner. You might want to keep on changing if it is THAT dirty. if it is indeed THAT dirty, you might want to spend that $100 to get it flushed from a mechanic. Unless for some reason you have that machine that recycles the oil and flushes out your tranny.... but then you're just nuts...heh
