Replacing Rear O2 sensor

only writeup i can find is:

http://www.motorvate.ca/mvp.php/509

doesn't say what tools are needed etc..

i just got my rear o2 sensor in the mail (and id like to replace it asap) but im tool-less (i may have a phillips around here) atm .. does anyone know / remember whats needed to get the o2 out / in? is it plug and play?

i don't feel like jacking the car up with the max-jack and seeing that there's nothing i can do besides twist with my teeth.

ur screwdriver is useless for o2 sensor removal. go to ur local auto parts store....ie:advance auto parts....and take the o2 sensor wit u.
ask em where the sockets are to remove o2 sensors.
they come in diff sizes. buy the right size socket. these sockets have an opening on the side so that thee wire from the o2 sensor wudnt get in the way.

also buy a ratchet to fit ur socket for the o2 sensor.

You can also rent tools from Auto-Zone if you have one near you.

an O2 socket whould be all you need. it's a tight fit if you still have the stock y-pipe.

yeah opened ended wrenches work. I had to use one on one of my front O2 sensors that I couldn't get my o2 tool in there. Also, if you just got the sensor without a plug (universal), you'll need something to attach the wires together, wire connectors + heat shrink work nicely.

open end wrench should work...or an 02 socket, i replaced my front o2 sensor a few weeks ago and that was a real pain, the rear should be much easier as long as rust isnt too much of an issue it should be pretty much plug and play. just dont touch the tip of the sensor

k i did it.. expected a 10 minute job .. took 2 people a bit under an hour... the whole friggin catback is rusted to sh*t...cut off all the wiring with a knife.. then beat the crap out of the actual sensor and still nothing.. then started taking chunks out of it and finally got in a drill to finally fit with like a 7/8 socket (didn't have 22mm although i think a 20 would fit) and then got the **** out and threw it down the block.. chased it and beat it to the ground some...

then the rest was relatively easy..

CEL was gone for about 15 minutes.. which were one of the happiest 15 minutes of my maxima owning life..and then it lit back up again with an 0505 code which is what i had in the first place months ago and there's been to much maintenance done since then to list..

basically g*d is f*cking with me

Punch your mechanic in the head ;-).

Jk.. but if you're on a budget like i was.. then man i have some good news for you

http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=289189

^ click that link.. the group deal should still be going on.. give the guys a call.

From what i was told they're only doing the "special" on "Walker" models.

it's 10% off orders by credit card over the phone, or 15% off ordered by money order (i did money order). Just mention the "Maxima.org discount" and they'll know what you're talking about.

you didn't mention whether you need a rear or front o2 sensor.. but they should have both on sale.

also shipping is free if the order is over 50$ (and it comes out to be a bit over that.. so basically you're set)

- good luck.. if you have some issues with install and its the rear o2 feel free to PM me.

17 mm open end wrench

I just did mine an hour ago. That is all it took along with some liquid wrench.

I need to replace my rear O2 sensor too. I see in this thread that both 22 mm and 17 mm are mentioned. Mine is 17 mm and none of the auto parts stores had anything that size. I think Wahoohead, you said that you got yours off with the 17 mm open wrench - did you have to remove the cat heat sheild first? Thanks.

Yup

Took off the cat's heat shield, (4-6 bolts) and then a 17 MM wrench fits on there with plenty of room to spare. This was an easy job.

from this GD, or whenever you order an O2 sensor, does it come with the wiring/harness to be a direct replacement, or do you need to splice the wires some?

to make it clear, are they car-specific or just unversal?

Thanks Wahoohead. Those bolts are pretty rusted but I'll give it a try.
