0505 Cure me...

After being on a budget for a hell of a long time (still on a budget but not as tight) and doing all sorts of maintenance to make my max a max (was getting 12-13 mpg and it wasn't pulling at all).

after a new knock sensor, new rear o2 sensor, new spark plugs, oil change to synthetic, new calipers, new rotors, new brake pads and new brake lines... i managed to get the CEL off for about 15 minutes (today) .. which happened to be some of the happiest 15 minutes of my max owning experience.

and then.. back on it went with an 0505 code

"0505
No Failure Recorded/Detected"

(yes i know what it means so if you hopped in here to tell me to read the stickies.. hop right back out ;-) also while im on the flaming i may as well go forth and say yes i know pretty much everything except for the KS and o2 sensor out of the above maintenance list wouldn't trip the CEL.. now that that's out of the way let me cut to the chase)

is there anyway to get rid of the 0505 code? i was getting it way before i did any maintenance to this car.. and then one day the KS and o2 both went off...

is there any cure to this "ghost code"? do i continue to reset the ECU and hope for the best? do i wait for something to go wrong so i have something else to worry about? do i put black tape on my dash to cover up the CEL so i don't have to think about it as i drive?

- thanks in advance

Code 0505 will always be there when you do not have anything wrong with your car. It is just there to tell you that everything is ok. You should be glad you are getting that code.

Your pretty sarcastic to be asking for help in here. I'll repeat what the other guy said, 0505 means no failure recorded or detected. It will always show you that code if there are no other cause for other codes to be trapped by the ECU. If you'd like to get rid of that code, you can yank off an O2 sensor. That will surely give you a different code and make 0505 disappear. But I assure you, you will wish you can get your 0505 back.

People who have been here longer will tell you or any other newbie (like you) to read the stickies because it's their tendency to not read them. That is why they are there, to answer questions that have been covered and was saved to benefit others who might be getting the same issues. You obviously don't know everything as you stated below so get cracking at reading them stickies because you obviously need to learn more about Maximas.

That's what his question is: why 0505 is tripping his CEL.

I have a feeling he's actually clearing the codes before he's displaying them.

You can only turn that screw once back and forth to get into diagnostic mode. If you miss and turn it twice, you will clear any stored codes and get 0505 as the result.

Be a bit more carefull when putting your ECU into diagnostic mode after your CEL comes on.

AxisKILL, that does sound very strange - IIRC, someone else had this problem and found that the screw on the ECU wasn't completely turned back to the normal operation mode after retrieving codes. So, pull your codes again and make sure you turn the ECU screw all the way back (counter clock-wise). I hope it's that easy for you.

The other thing to do, is just pop over to Autozone and have them pull the codes (assuming the CEL is still lit). That will tell you once and for all what exact codes are being reported. I agree with njmaxseltd - something's not right. The 0505 does not set the CEL.

last time i reset the ECU i just disconnected the battery instead of the clockwise-counterclickwise-repeat procedure.. but mkay i'll give it a go manually and see what it does for me.

i understand that 0505 = no error.. but it just doesn't seem logical for a car to not have any errors and still have a CEL light go on.
