are there any signs i should flush my tranny

i was wondering if there is any way that i can tell that changing my tranny fluid is the right way to go. i mean i know that it's not a bad idea i have 103K on the car, but i was wondering if there are symptoms that the fluid is past it's prime.

Yup, the trans fluid should be Red it turns brown/darker as the oil gets older and thin from all the heat in the auto trans. Check your auto trans dipstick.

You can feel a slight slip/hesitation when going between gears, like its dragging abit.. shifts should be quick and smooth on good trans fluid.

Its best to flush it anyway if your at all unsure, heat is the biggest problem with autos so without the trans oil you'll have problems

i have a 5 speed tranny. the thing i'm experiencing is a kind of hesitation when first gear first engages. it's only after the car has warmed up a bit and i've been driving for a little while. first gear kinda shakes the car as i'm letting out the clutch and then engages abruptly, dropping the revs really low in the process. if anyone can tell me what this might be i'd really appreciate it

i have a hard time reading the tranny oil stick. It always looks like its overfilled. Shouldn't it be like lower then the 2 crease. Just looks odd to me.

anyone have any opinions on what might be causing this. it's also only from a dead stop if that helps. i think it's getting worse and i want to get it taken care of before it becomes a big problem

no clue. i remember in the haynes manual tho it said drive around on it for like 30 mins to get it warm, then check level. it should be between the S curve in the dipstick. color also should be red like posted above.

The 5 speed doesn't have a dipstick. You'll have to take off a bolt on the side where you put in the tranny fluid. To check the level you have to stick your finger in and feel for the level. Because you're feeling some slippage means your oil level is low. I felt this problem before with my '80 Honda Prelude 5 speed.

HOW TO's on flushing your tranny are stickied in the fluid section for both Manual and Auto trannies.

I'm glad I have a manual, its as easy and drain and refill.

manual trans slippage

Sorry, any slippage in a manual tranny is not usually due to low oil level, it's due to clutch slippage.

Another to tell the tranny fluid is done

Its smells almost burnt, and tastes horrible

j/k on the taste part, but the smell test works

The transmission fluid must not only be red, but it must be bright red if it's fine. Once this guy showed me by putting some of my trans. fluid on a white ceramic tile and then putting some fresh fluid next to it. You don't really notice the difference until you look at it like that. When it has become a dull red, you need to start thinking about flushing it...any darker, replace it.

I thought it was more a pink color when it was good. Anyway, I think the manual says every 30,000 miles or so. I did mine at 33K for ****s and giggles and because they were having a combo oil/tranny fluish special. That was 3 years ago or so, Im at about 60K right now and plan on doing it again with the 60K tune up.

Well maybe I'm wrong, but I could've sworn it was supposed to be bright red. He showed me mine and it was pink I thought and he said I needed to get it changed.
