Ticking Noise
#1
On my 97 SE. When I'm cruising slow maybe 10-15 mph I hear a ticking noise when the wheel is turned slightly, when I turn is further the noise stops . Does anyone know what it may be ? Has anyone else experienced the same problem. I don't think it's the CV Boots because it also occurs when the car is stopped.

It is good that this sound can be heard with the car stopped. That makes it easier to find. Equip yourself with a 4-foot length of small diameter vacuum hose. Raise the hood. Have an assistant turn the wheel right left to produce the clunking sound. The motor does not have to be running for this test. You put one end of the hose in your ear position the other end near the top of the struts. This will help pinpoint the origin of the unwanted sound. It could be coming from the strut mounting bearing or strut mounting insulator. See Chilton (page 8-9) or Haynes (page 10-6).

The sound can be heard inside the car , but when I get out I can't hear it. The first thing I thought of were the axel boots , and I've had plenty of experience with those. However, this noise only happens at very low speeds, and when turning the wheel 5-10 degrees to the left .I'm going to try the vaccum hose method. Thanks for the advice Daniel.
