The grade (octane) of fuel you run as absolutely no physical effect on the knock sensor.

That would be the hard way... Just shove your hand in the opening and use a ratchet or wrench..

Hi Everyone,
My check engine light indicates that my knock sensor and coolant temp sensor are malfunctioning. The problem with my '95 maxima is that it stalls a lot, even while driving. Could the knock sensor be a cause, or a symptom?

Thanks,

- Neil

as far as i know a knock sensor will not do that, but a coolent temp sensor may if it is sending a signal to the ECU that your car is overheating, the ecu will try and correct the overheating and may even shut the car down, but that is very rare. there may be another issue that is not seen

There is also a hole in my flex pipe, could that have an impact on the stalling? I put new spark plugs in last year, so I'm not sure if its a problem with the plugs.

I actually brought my car over to California from the east coast and much of the exhaust system is rusted - which makes replacing the flex pipe a little difficult. Aside from the noise and a lower fuel efficiency, what could the hole in the flex pipe do?

By the way, I've brought my car ('95 GLE auto) into a couple places, and no one has been able to tell me why the car stalls frequently!

Thanks,

- Neil

Its the Engine Coolant Temp Sensor that is stalling your car, AS some said above. Its a $20 sensor that goes in your upper radiator hose - 5-10min job tops.

umm.. if you read the replies to the original post you would have seen a variety of genuine options for < $100, e.g. Pinnacle Nissan.

JUST GET UR girlfriend or a small child TO STICK HER/his SMALL HAND in the cramped area- and viola, just remove the stupid delicate and expensive sensor, and avoid bleeding, bruising and scraping to your (not meant for removal of this sensor) guy hands. Oh and make sure they know if they drop it in the bay, u'll be forced to kick their butt.

on a 99 Max, when the ks goes dead does it illuminate the Check engine light. Reason is because I am having the sputtering feeling when accelerating from a dead stop. the only time the check engine goes on or flashes is when Im doing hard accelerating. I know that is caused by Ign Coils
Im wondering if my KS is bad also

No. The KS will not set the CEL by itself. Replace your coil packs, reset the ECU and see how the car drives. Check for codes in a few days (Even if the CEL is off) to make sure the KS code didn't post.

What do the coil packs do? I am going to try this, as my CEL is flashing for the knock sensor and 'engine coolant temperature sensor'.

Attention MR. Newbie you donot post in other people threads your problems. However a blinking CEL indicated a cylinder misfire with your coilpacks. They are ina sense the rotors, wires and ignition coil all built into one. They are common failures on nissan maximas and most people will replace a few or all at 100k. You can get all 6 in a group deal for about 300 bucks and installation in very easy.

Does a bad knock sensor cause or contribute to hard starting when warm? I found a genuine Nissan knock sensor on EBAY for approx 101.00 shipped/

Oh yeah, and I used a extra long pair of needle nose pliers to place the knock sensor back into position with the bolt in it. and then lightly tapped the sides of the bolt with a screwdriver until the threads caught on then tighten with socket. It would be good to have a magnetic pick up tool just in case you drop the bolt.
