rough idle when warm engine

in the morning or after the car has been sitting for a few hours to cool down, when i start it, the idle rpms are close to ~1,000. After some driving or after the car is warmed up, the idles drop to 500. There is shaking in the cabin, and the car is trying to stay alive, but it still hasnt died on me yet. When this is happening , i opened the hood and seen the motor shaking harshly. This occurs at stop lights, and when parked, when engine is warm. When cool or cold car runs perfect. Any ideas/ suggestions/thoughts what could be wrong ?
Thanks

It sounds like the car is misfiring, if it is then check the coil packs and fuel injectors.

the idle gets kinda low, about 500 rpm . The car starts to shake, but not rumble, just minimal vibration. It feels like it wants to shut off.
The rpms just hover at the 500's rpm area when the engine is warm. It does not jump drastically back up to try to catch itself. Just give or take a few rpm's from the 500 rpm area.

maybe a fuel injector went out??? I had the same problem with my old '93 240sx, one of the fuel injectors went out and the engine felt similar to what you have described.

I know its prolly something you checked, but the simplest explanation would be a vacuum leak. I'd try looking into that since you could fix that for free

Adjust your idle speed up to where it's supposed to be. Use the black screw on top of the IACV to make the adjustment. It should be around 650 - 750 RPM's, not 500.

+1 for adjusting idle speed to see if that cures it. Check the stickies (4th gen. how to's) to find out how to adjust it... If the idle doesn't fluctuate, I doubt you have any of the above problems mentioned. Try doing all of the basic maintanence first, too before jumping to conclusions.

Are you NOT paying attention to what we are saying. New spark plugs wont eliminate this problem. You should check your coil packs since 99's are known for having them go bad.

YES, I clearly understand what you guys are saying, but what you dont understand is that the spark plugs should have been changed at the 60k tuneup, correct ?? now it has about 68k or 69k with the originals still in there.(wasnt my fault, dad did most of the engine maintinance before)

Try cleaning your EGR pipes, or the egr valve could be malfunctioning...which will cause stalls at stoplights and such. If you've never cleaned em, they need it! Mine were SOLID with carbon deposits at 127k. Good luck.

ok, so i just finished replacing the spark plugs with NGK Copper. I dont get the error code 0701 anymore ( multiple cylinder misfire), But i still have that shaking. I tryed adjusting the IACV but no luck. I am going to clean the throttle body now, and see if that helps. What should the throttle body cleaner be called that i should get ?

Can someone point me in the right direction here? My wife's '99 Maxima SE will start most of the time when the engine is cold and it runs great, no problems, not even in 95 degree heat. The problem is that it refuses to restart when it is warm, and occasionally will not start when the engine is cold. Any ideas or help is greatly appreciated!

ok, i have cleaned the throttle body, IACV, installed NGK Copper spark plugs (6)
Still get that damn rough idle when engine is warm. The engine will be running, in DRIVE, NEUTRAL, itll be running fine at about 700-800 rpm, then drop to like 500ish, for about 5-10 seconds. The digital mileage screen ( 1999 maxima i have) and the seat belt indicator will dim when the rpms drop to about 500 rpm. the cabin will then shake and this is GETTING ANNOYING. Sometimes when im turning left at the intersection, and waiting for the incoming traffic to pass, the rpms drop and i get this nasty shaking of the cabin.
Any other ideas or thoughts greatly appreciated!!
Thanks

if it was misfiring, the rpms would be higher.

idle is adjusted at factory, if you have to adjust it,

1) you previously messed with it before
2) your going to bypass the REAL problem.

seems the problem is when the engine warms up. so i'm assuming it works well in open loop. of course, heat could be an issue on coil packs. check your coil packs and anything related to closed loop

Check them precisely as described in section 5-9 of the Haynes manual. There must also be something in the stickies. You need an ohmmeter to check the coil packs. Is that something that can be rented?

I have the same problem, but my shaking is so damn horrible, I am about to change my spark plugs, then ride my car in to my neighbor, nissan mechanic, hopefully he can pinpoint the problem. Turning on AC helps alot, thats how I was driving for the past 2 weeks with AC pumping hard. Careful though, cause I got stalled out twice, once on highway ramp and once on stop light, so dont tailgate for now.
