What is the purpose of the boost sensor?

Is it actually a MAP sensor?
If it is sensing boost, where is this boost coming from?
I hooked my vaccum guage to it, and it seems to be reading intake manifold vaccum.

It is a MAP/Barometric pressure sensor. Not sure why they label it as the boost sensor.

what? did Nissan forget to put your turbo kit in? this happened to some other people I know. They got their max and saw the boost sensor, but no turbo! i'd go back and complain...

Thanks...
So...the last time I played with an fuel injected motor was my 86 IROC. That was mass air with a MAF. My brother had a 90 IROC which was speed density and used a MAP sensor.
I always thought a fuel injection system was either mass air or speed density.
So, I suspect our maximas are mass air, but with a MAP for some extra fine tuning. Is this right?

The Boost sensor is only there to tell when the EGR valve is opening by sending a difference in pressure to the PCM.
