Tires For 4th Gen

Are 205/40/17 tires a good idea for my 96 Maxima?

thanks

would 205/40 tires be too narrow for a 4th gen?

if so....what would be the consequences?

thanks

This size is more like the size that would keep the speedo most accurate. 205's are definitely too narrow. You want more width with a lower profile tire in order to benefit most from 17" rims.

running 205/40 tires will most likely have a higher chance of having your rims bent. reason why people run 205/40/17 on their cars is because their wheel well isn't big enough for a bigger tire. It will look really funny on your car with those tires. I'm thinking that you're getting rims with tires?? if thats the case, take the tires off, sell them on e-bay, and use that money towards new tires. if you're buying brand new tires, don't even think about those. like the other orger said, you should get 235/45/17. You can get away with 225/45/17 or 235/40/17 but def not 205/40/17, i believe those are civic specs...

ooops..yea..like what he said...seems like you are getting a tire package...you can ask them to upgrade the tire size...probably like 60-100bux more you can get the right size tire...give us links to those rims/tires!

and i can hit a pothole 20+ mph with 235/45/17 tires n won't bend my rim while you would of had to repair your rim going 20 mph less then what i just hit the same exact pothole with 205/40/17. No matter how careful you are, you cannot avoid ALL potholes. Unless you do'nt care about crashing into other cars and other things. If you want more performance, you will get wider tires = more grip = better turning = less chance of sliding out = won't crash.

STOP BEING CHEAP ON SHOES FOR YOUR CAR. If you really want to get cheap tires, get WANLI tires from e-bay. They're teh cheapest things out there. But then those tires aren't that good. You might as well slap tires from like pepboys or something. n i'm not talking about their hankook tires.

No offense, but you think you have improvements because your wheel diameter is much less then stock therefore giving you a high speed rating. but in reality you're actually slower. i dunno why anyone wouldn't get the right tires for their cars. when you WEAR a size 11 shoe, will you BUY a size 8 for yourself?? NO!!!! SO STOP BUYING TIRES THAT ARE TOO SMALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!

205 is too narrow for a Maxima. Like compacts use 205s (Lancer Ralliart definitely) and the Maxima is a bit wider, so definitely get something wider. I'm still using my stock rims for my 97 SE, went with 225s and using Potenza G009. These tires are actually quite good in terms of noise and tread wear. For those of us who need a little snow traction, it's adequte (I live in Canada). However, I do find that on hard cornering the outer edge will give out a bit and lose control (almost hit the curb) but once you shift the weight over and get it riding in the center, then it's all good.

yeah, 205 seems really skinny. on my 96SE, they stock tire size is already a 215 and that's on 15" rims! why would you want to downgrade? i think that it will look kinda weird also. these skinny tires on +1 or +2 rims...it'll look like you're riding on 4 donuts!!
take their advice and go 225 or greater.

If I had my choice, sure I'd go with 235/45/17.

I got four new unused rims with 4 new unused tires (205/40/17) mounted & balanced for 375 bucks off some kid who bought the wrong package for his car... I drive like an old lady. They wont be run in the snow. Like I said Fawk it.

I got 225/50/16 Goodyear - American Eagle H's on my car with the stock rims and I really like them. They grip like hell and are pretty quiet.

205 is NOT too narrow, unless you're on stock suspension.

I'm on Ksport coilovers with 205/55/16 Hankook Ventus Sport K104s, and I can handily outmaneuver Volvo S40s and Acura RSXs. So far I haven't seen anyone follow my speed into a corner when I'm pushing it.

Wide tires aren't only bad for winter. They're also not as good for hydroplaning resistance. So really, if you pick your tires correctly, a 205 section width can be just fine.

The reason 205/40/17 might not be a good size is that the sidewall is too short, so the overall diameter will be almost 2 inches smaller than stock. According to the trusty Miata.net tire size calculator, your speedo will read 60mph when you're actually going 56. Even if that doesn't sound like a lot to you, it will sound a lot more significant when you start having to fill your gas tank more often. You'll also have to run at least 40 psi to make sure you don't kill your rims when you hit a pothole.

Then again, you would get better acceleration, and short sidewalls are good for handling. Your call.

Here's the tire calculator, in case you've been living under a rock:

The only problem I see with wider tires is that you get splattering on your doors no matter how careful you are going over puddles LOL
