Its supposed to be changed every 30K or 2 years. Take your car to a radiator shop and get them to do a pH test of the coolant to determine if it needs to be replaced. This entails dipping a special piece of paper into the rad and checking the color of the strip of paper. I don't think you would be charged for this test.

See the sticky in the Fluids and Lubricants forum about coolants. You are in the wrong forum.

I can't get too excited about what kind of coolant I use. What's good enough for the radiator shop is good enough for me.

My last coolant change was Cdn$40 cash. I can't notice any difference after changing it out, but your radiator will over time.

Coolant is not tested by measuring the pH. It is tested by measuring the specific gravity.

I drain and fill my radiator about once a year.

Are you sure?
The specific gravity depends on the amount of water you cut your coolant with, I can't see what that has to do with coolant health.

pH on the other hand, seems more likely, an acidic solution will eat the metal of your radiator. Flushing your coolant would flush out the acidic solution.

After checking the Coolants forum on BITOG, I see both tests are done. Specific gravity can be tested using a floatation device, but pH is tested with a strip of paper. I am referring to the latter test, which is the one conducted to determine whether or not the coolant has lost its effectiveness.

A one year drain and fill is probably overkill and a waste of money, depending on how many miles you drive.

Every two years I go with the a coolant flush. Nothing worst than ruining a water pump on the VQ.

What are you looking for when you need to change your coolant? I looked at mine and the color doesn't look bad, but I've passed the 30,000 mile mark.
