knock sensor labor

has anyone gone to the dealer to change their knock sensor? i don't think im confident enough to do it myself, so i'm wondering how much would the dealer charge on labor, and if i brought my own would they install it?

theyd probably say they need to remove the intake manifold, and everything that connects to it, and charge you like $200 or more for labor alone. It's really not that hard to do yourself, just read the writeup, grab some tools, and get greasy.

Hey, don't go to the dealership for labor, they'll charge an arm and a leg. If you're not confident in doing it, you can always bring it to me and i'll definitely help you out, free of charge. It's not hard at all. I'm in NJ, by the way. I did my first KS in my car, and it took me about half an hour. Unless your car is a 99 calispec, i shouldnt have a problem with it. Let me know.

Thanks,
-Freddy

ur all on crack...find a kid down the street...pay him five bucks and he could take the screw off with his tiny hands...THEN just put it back in...get inside ur car turn the screw on the ECU and call it a day...probably the easiest thing and most effective thing to do on a max...regains of up to 30hp...

I couldn't get my hand in there so this is how I did it-

Take the air intake plumbing out of the engine bay.
You'll need one of those universal joint(swivel) extentions to be able to get the socket in there.
I used 3/8 sockets and extensions, some people use 1/4 for better clearance.
I forget the socket size 10 or 12 mm?? Probobly 12mm

Unscrew that bish with some long extentions and and a then pull the bolt out with a long magnet. Pull out the ks with the wire attached then unplug it once you pull it out.

As for the install I used one of those long pull out magnets again to drop the screw in the ks while holding the ks(plugged in to the wire already) in place with a long stick. Once I had the screw in the hole and right over where it screws in, I patiently turned the screw with the magnet just enough to get it to where you can't pull the screw out with the magnet then I just pulled the magnet out and very carefully put the socket over the bolt with a couple of long extensions on the ratchet then screwed it on.

Reset codes.

I've done a few myself...and I would NEVER take my car to the dealer unless its something I or someone I know cant help me fix.

For the KS you need 1/4" ratchet...extension...and a SWIVEL joint adapter. Put a 12mm or 3/8" socket on the adapter and break that sommb*tch loose. It takes me about 10-15 minutes to change one out if the car is cool..

I just stuck my hand in there and cut it up real bad. My mechanic told me it would take him 1 1/2 to 2 hours to do it, I was like F that I'm not paying like $180 labor for something that I can do myself. I had him order the part for me and when he got it I picked it up and had it in my car within 20 min and made my mechanic feel like a dumbass. He replied with "oh that's quite impressive that you did it that quickly" lol. Whatever, I had bloody knuckles but it's worth the pain to save some $. Definitely just do it yourself you can get the extension and swivel socket and do it that way which will make it the easiest and quickest or you can do what i did and just jam your hand in there. Whatever works for you, but definitely don't pay someone to do something this easy

No, but make sure it's tight and wont come loose but dont crank it on there or you risk damaging the sensor. I say tighten it until you can't anymore with moderate pressure, then do another 1/4 turn

Ok so maybe I was 'wrong' but I highly doubt the 15ft pounds is that critical. If you don't have a torque wrench I wouldn't be paranoid about it so if you don't have a torque wrench you can follow the advice I gave above. I installed my new knock sensor over a year ago and all is well

dr_blaqueman , so you are saying is u dont need to take out the intake manifold,etc.. to replace this darn thing /? i m getting check engine light, and i have tested the continuity between the two legs of the wire socket of the knock sensor and gave me infinity resistance.. and per Hayes manual, if you get infinite resistance between those leads, the knock sensor is bad....
my other question is , how much dows this darn thing cost??? where can i get it from?? the 18in extension is 1/2 inch?? do i need SWIVEL one??
please advise.
thanks.

When you have a circuit that is working properly, there is a certain voltage, current and resistance running through it. One way to find out if that circuit is bad or not is to measure the resistance through that circuit, like the circuit in the knock sensor. If you hook up your meter to the leads of the knock sensor and you get inifinite resistance then that means your circuit is bad/broken.

The simplest example I can think of off the top of my head is a light bulb. When a bulb is good, you can see the element inside is in one piece and connected. There is a certain resistance running across that element which you can measure. When a bulb blows, that element breaks and you can usually hear the broken piece rattling around in the bulb. If you were to try to measure the resistance across that bulb circuit after that element broke then you'd read infinite resistance because there is no complete/closed circuit to measure across.

Hope this helps.

Is there anything else to check with the 03 04 code, or is it an immediate replacement?

I've got another code that comes up - 05 12, but I can't find ANYTHING on that. I'll post a separate message on this forum in hopes of someone else being familiar with it.

I also bought it from Bill off eBay - got it in no time and it IS a genuine Nissan part. I'll be installing it this weekend.

Let me look, I'll post a reply shortly.

EDIT: Wow, I might just have bought the last one. Don't be discouraged just yet! E-mail him and ask if he'll be re-stocking anytime soon. I also just read that the ECU won't throw the knock sensor code alone? I currently have an engine misfire - so could it be that that's what possibly throwing the knock sensor code? If so, I may have a knock sensor up for sale.. I'm going to start a new thread with that very question. I'll let you know what happens..

Hold in that orientation and put the socket on the bolt that holds the KS there. Have a friend shine a flashlight down there or park in the sun.
