I appreciate the tip 3rd man. I'll give it another shot. I'm wondering if I should switch to 1/4" tools. Being a little skinnier, It may get on there a little better? or should I remove some parts such as intake?

well... my right hand wouldn't fit in there but my left would... don't know why...
3/8 worked just fine... the biggest issue is getting your hand in there to grab the bolt and to put it back on...
if your hand fits, then you can do it... no tricks... if your hand doesn't fit... get someone with smaller hands...

Hey imma buy that mevi intake manifold right, and my knock sensor went bad, do you think i should wait to get the mevi so i can just switch everything at once even though i gotta take the intake manifold off, oh yeah um, once the knock sensor is replaced will that "service engine soon" light turn off, or do i gotta take it to a dealer to get that **** off?

$68 ebay knock sensor

it took me an hour to install it, b/c it was tough getting the socket to stay on the bolt. one time the socket came off the extension, so i duct taped the tools all together. sheesh, the bolt was pretty tough to get loose! anyway, all my horsepower is back & my max is driving SICK, getting at least 24mpg. well worth it, & saved about $230 DIY!

HOw were the cars driving pre knock sensor? My car is idleing wierd. Sputtering, Not much power before 3k rpm, and seems like the air to fuel is off... Are those signs of a bad knock sensor? Oh and i get about 260 miles per tank...

my CEL popped up last week on my 98 max GXE...I got a diagnosis scheduled for mid week..and a day before I actually gave my car, the CEL went off..since the car had some other problem, I went ahead and left my car in the service center on the scheduled date.

other problems were fixed..i said no to replacing the KS as the cost seemed too high (300 labour +160 part)..the only code that came out of the CEL diagnosis is P0325 which in turn maps to 0304. I have read in many posts here and elsewhere also that 0304 does not trigger the CEL. It has to come with some additional code. Now that no other codes were returned, I am wondering what was the problem ? Did it correct itself ??

once I found that it had something to with knock, I have started using premium(93) fuel. I inquired at some other mechanic and he told me the total cost of replacing the KS is $300 (labour + part).

Also, I have to get my car emission tested within next 6 weeks...so my questions are
1) was my KS really gone bad and has to be replaced ?
2) should I get my car rediagnosied ?
3) will my car fail the emission test if I dont do anything about the code that is still in the car's ECU

Thanks
askids

I also changed the KS myself a while back after getting the code, which stayed even after I reset the ECU. It turned out the fault was on the short cable (about a foot in length connecting the KS to the main wire harness)--open circuit. The part cost ~$20. The KS code cleared after I replaced the cable. So if you have a KS code and not sure if the KS is good, it may be easier/ecomonical to check the cable first with an ohm-meter before replacing the KS.

My mechanic who has been working on nissans for ten years said that the knock sensor code always shows up no matter what. He said all maximas have a knock sensor code because the KS was put in the wrong place and that its to sensitive.

Knock Sensor

For purchase go to Ebay and search (can't remember name of seller). Regularly on sale with "Buy-It Now" price of $60. & free shipping for OEM part made in Japan.
Installation is as stated in some of these earlier posts.
I could not fit my hand in there either and used long extensions, magnets, electrical tape etc.. Requires lots of patience. Forget about getting a torque wrench in there. Tighten snug.

Hey i just tried removing my knock sensor today, but it seems like the bolt is seized. Anyone have any suggestions? Im amazed how some people could just unscrew it with their hands, I mean i could fit my left hand in there and i couldnt loosen it.

Whats the secret to this?!?

thanks

justin

Ks

Mine was pretty tight too. It took quite a bit of force using the 3/8" ratchet, extensions, and swivel socket. Had to be careful and not strip. No way your going to loosen "by hand". I can't believe you got your hand in there!
Try using the tools.

Yeah man, it was so frustrating to try and get it off. I even went to sears and bought a 3/8 U-Joint which didnt work, then i bought something called a 12mm 1/4" driver "flex-Joint". And that didnt work either. I even attempted to use a wrench but to no avail. My friend told me to use pbblaster and leave it on overnight.
