"custom" short throw

Just bought a 96 5speed that a "youngster" had owned... his idea of a short throw was to saw off the top of the stock shifter and use set-screws to hold a "custom" ball against shifter. Being a "slightly more mature" driver this arrangement doesn't hit me where I live.. so to speak. Do I: 1) have to replace the whole #**^## shifter, 2) remove the shifter and have someone machine a threaded end so I can securely attach any type of screw down ****, or try to find some open-ended **** (a bit classier design) and stay with my "custom" STS using set screws?? If I change shifters should I just stay with stock and use better bushings (anyone got part #'s?) or do (true) STS's have better gear engagement for non-racing geezers like me... did I admit that??? What to do??

Change the current **** to one you like, I cut mine down and my Momo is attached by 3 small allen screws with no problem, I really like it and hey I'm older than you.

Thank y'all for the input... I guess I can live with "custom" height and either use better **** w/ set screwws or spend $$ rethreading... I think I'll just wait till I'm motivated to change the entire shifter (and replace those "magic" bushings) before I rethread and take out shifter anyway. Thank you guys, again! Doug (the graying haired "geez" with a custom shifter)
