Sticking the stock air box back in :)
I decided to go with the stock air intake and see how that flys with me. Kind of getting sick of the noise my Frankencar/Apexi filter intake makes and starting to miss my low end alot. The lag is really bad especially when you have an auto.
I was doing a bit of research and found 2 drop in panel filters that I could use. The K&N and a HKS. If there are others, let me know. The K&N I've seen used all over the place so there is no question with that one. I'm wondering who on the Org has used or is currently using a filter made by HKS. They seem to be constructed of foam so I don't think they need to be oiled, which I kinda like. Are they a "life time" filter like the K&N's? Opinions on the filters would help me out.
Maybe since I'm going to be using the stock box, I should just use a fram cause it won't make a diff now?

I'd stick with K&N.

How does the stock/pop setup feel? Big diff? Or you just did it cause you were itching to put heavy tools on your engine bay?

I'd try either the kool blue or the fram air hog. The cool blue filters better than the k&n and flows at least as good, probably better. I'm also going back to stock box and will be getting a $5 paper filter from napa. There is no filter in the world that is worth more than $20 for 2 extra hp and poorer filtering than a paper filter.

Both the kool blue and the air hog seem to need oiling, at least from what I've researched just now. Maybe I'll just say ef it and go with the paper filter too. I just don't like the fact that there is oil, right where the engine gets it's air from. Granted people have used oiled filters for many many yrs without a problem. I still don't like the idea. Maybe I'll try the HKS panel filter for the hell of it. Then come back here and cry when the foam element breaks off and gets sucked into my engine and hurt things.

the oil is there so dirt and debre doesnt get through.
so it makes it re-useable by just cleaning and re-oiling it.
meaning a paper = replace, oil = re-oil and reuse.
is their much differnce in performance? i would guess that some are enginereaed for better airflow... the oil based ones usually dont let anything through, so they may let cleaner air pass through.
i dunno... i kinda want to replace my stillin hi-flow intake, BUT i also just want to mod it so i have the ram air directly into the filter and make my own little box for it, also make a heat shield so the hot air doesnt get into it.

foam is for better flow, but they get clogged and flow nothing after a while. I like the K&N for the no changing option. I know its more expensive, and then you have to buy the re-oiling kit... So its probably more expensive in the long run also. Paper is lame to me, but its all up to what you want, they all get the job done. and the flow of a filter can only vary so much when they are the same size.

Did some research, try Pro dry S filter from AFE, around $40. NEVER REPLACE, no oil, flows better than stock, no huge gains, but 1-2 hp and a little better throttle response plus the site says usually 1-2 mps inprovement and smotther acceleration throughout the powerband
My .02$

Bumping threads show people are SEARCHING !! How can you please it sheez..
I have the stock intake and think it's well designed. However it doesn't seem one piece so the velocity and actual intaking might be hampered compared to those intake system.
As far as filter is concerned?
Have you guys checked your Throttle Body and what not? I believe oiled filters leads to:
excessive/insufficient oiling. It's difficult and reusing something like a FILTER is pathetic. No matter what they advertise, I'd feel much better buying and changing the AIR FILTER.
THE HKS doesn't even seem like a filter. If your alright pulling in crap, then so be it. I've been using paper air filter of all sorts and haven't had any problem. If your ****, then use AMSOIL AIR FILTER.

basically saying the OEM nissan airfilter beats all other air filters, including K&N, fram, etc.

The air box has a "reservoir" on top of the filter where filtered air is able to reside and be utilized immediately (ex. from a stop). The engine has to filter air every time with a cone filter, resulting in lag.

Thats a myth and its not just the initial throttle slap because if it were true then it would not effect the rest of the rev range as far as tq is concerned. Theres not really much to complain about anyway. Personally i prefer my frankencar just for the pure fact that the TQ lost down low makes it easier to get a consistant launch that doesnt spin hard out of the hole on street tires.
