Driving a corolla = :(

A few weeks ago, someone backed out of their parking spot without looking and drove into my driver's side door. Finally heard from my insurance company who gave me the go ahead to get the work done without paying the deductible, and was also assured that my premium won't go up (yeah right). Anyways, for the next few days I'll be driving a 2005 corolla, and so far, the best thing about driving that car is the new car smell, and the mileage. I was thinking that as a first car, it would probably be ok, but after being spoiled driving the Max, it's so much easier to find faults with the corolla. Sitting at stop lights with the corolla vibrating is getting tiresome. It's funny, but I never really realized how smooth the VQ engine is, and how nicely it revs, even with the automatic tranny. I guess all it took was some time in a cheaper car to appreciate what I've got. It's a shame how rough even a new corolla engine is, compared to my 10 year old engine. I'm not even going to mention handling, or ergonomics or the width of the A pillar.

For a while there, I had been thinking of keeping the car another two or three years, but now I'm reconsidering. As long as the cost of keeping it in full working condition (where everything works, and works well) on a yearly basis is less than half the payments on a new car, then I'll stick with the Maxima. Hell, even it's almost the same cost, I think I'll hold on to it.

Anyone else feel this way?

By the way, I bought mine used about 3 years ago, I can say without a doubt, it's in way better driving condition than it was when I bought it (which is why I got such a great deal). More rust though...

I love my car to death, but its slow as hell, and looks pretty ugly with the sawlbades, but i'm working on improving that by lowering it first...

About the speed though, i dont know how i can fix that without dumping like 5k for sc and 5spd swap, or 4k for 3.5 swap w/ bold ons. i need something that im scared to give full throttle to...maybe a hayabusa...

I plan on keeping mine until I find a Skyline in my home town with under 10,000 miles for a low, low, price of four-hundred dollars.

You don't know how good you have it driving a v6 until you downgrade, and boy is it obvious, you almost get heavy footed drving the max, everything else feels like your driving with 87 octane, it sucks. Not to mention the vq used to win those jd power awards all the time of top ten engines.

Yeah, I know what you're talking about. I hate driving my Mom's Subaru Forester...its so gutless and I can't pass anybody on the highway cause I'm scared I won't make it around them before a car comes in the opposite lane. I wouldn't mind a 4 banger car with good gas mileage but as a second car to my Maxima. I plan on keeping the Maxima forever at this point...as long as I can still afford to go back to school without selling it.

Moving from my Max into my friends' 4cylinder Camries or Civics is just such a huge downgrade for me. My Max never feels like a drag racer since the engine is stock, but I move down to a 1.7 liter engine and I realize just how whup-*** my car really is. I NEVER worry about not having enough power to pass someone on the highway or the streets...

Since my Maxima is also my first car, I'm planning on never selling it. Once I'm down with college, it'll only be worth 2-3k anyways, so I'm just going to put it into storage and when I'm 50, I'll take it out, restore it, and have myself the best midlife crisis ever.

My mom has a corolla, and sometimes I have to drive it if my car is not available. There are some benefits to driving that smaller car though; much tighter stock suspension(if you don't think so...try pushing it...you'll be surprised like I was); fitting into small places (like a go-kart).

Then again, it's 2000 or something, not a 2005 like yours.

Try to make the best of it

Its funny ....only recently have new car even begun to approach the refinement and performance of the VQ Maxima....Just to mention an example, the Pontiac G6 is slower, uglier, more expensive, and less refined than a USED Max.........

And I know the Pontiac is not the only new car that's incapable of matching a decade-old car.My, the looks on peoples faces when they realize thave been blasted by a 10-year old car......and its smoother than their late-model EX-v6 whatever.

Never givin' up the Max.....as Martin Lawrence said, i'm a ride this B!tch till the wheels fall off....which in a Max , well,....that's simply not gonna happen .

Amen.

I drive my girlfriends 2002 Mitusbishi Mirage 1.5 auto, and you wont believe how little power this car has, I understand its a little run around car and not meant to have power, but it makes my max feel so much stronger when I get back in it and drive.

i have low miles on my max, and am not going to give it up for quite a while. And even when the engine dies, swap in a 3.5 and keep going, untill my body falls apart this car will be with me

OMG The power difference between the v6 Camry I had and the Max is like night and day. Even though the Camry had 185hp and the max has 190hp there is still a huge difference. I think it comes with the weight. Anyways I couldn't be happier.

I remember when I drove a 95 white lumina sedan. Wasn't exactly SLOW, but def a step down from the maxima level in every possible way. I still drive it on occassion when the max is being worked on. I remember when I was cruising on the highway at 80mph... felt like I was flying and the car was gonna take off. NOT A GOOD FEELING!

The thing looked like a police cruiser. Wouldn't be all that uncommon for me look in my rear view mirror and see brake lights as people passed me in the oncoming lane.

I never liked Toyotas...Have you seen their new ones...Their exhaust hangs much lower than the underbody of the car. I like how the Max has nice low end torque. I think it has like ~60% of the max torque at 2000RPM, I could be wrong. But helps pulling from the lights :P. Speaking of the Mirage...Aren't their 4-Bangers just the 2.0L engines in Lancers. Because I test drove a Lancer OZ...THEY DON'T MOVE!!! Which is why I got my sister to buy a Lancer Ralliart

Am I was willing? Did I ever say iw as going to help?

Just because I suggest something doen't mean I'm going to help pay for it.

OZ vs Ralliart? So I guess since you "got" her into getting the Ralliart, you're helping her with payments?

It's like buying a V6 Mustang/Camaro

Who asked you for your suggestion? Thought so. It's not like her sister came on here and asked you or any one else for their opinions.

And do not act like you never had typos'.

The only advantage that a v6 stang has over a maxima is the coupe feature and maybe the convertible (if you have that trim). The RWD is pointless with the lack of power -- No one is gonna drift in a v6 stang.

EDIT: wait. burnouts. forgot.

My only point was IMO, the only Lancer I'd get is the EVO ... but since I couldn't afford one, nor would I really want one, so instead I got the more practical, and affordable 2003 Maxima, and of coruse kept my 1995 Maxima ...

Sorry, but I have to defend the Toyota Corolla. I had a 1982Cololla wagon with 5 spd, rear wheel drive, and the venerable 90 hp 4 cylinder 3TC engine. I could chirp those little tires going into second gear all day long with that torquey little engine. The car had over 225,000 miles on it, it hauled my dog in comfort, and when pieces fell off of it (and they did from time to time), I threw them in the back of the car and just kept driving. I drove it from Boston, MA to Richmond, VA and back with no problems and drove it to work every day for a year. I sold it with over 230k miles and I'm sure its still running. All, that and a luggage rack for a net cost of $300 was great fun.

hymm....personally i do'nt think that i would trust a 23 yr old car....n i really dunno if i can handle my g/f's brother's dum-buggy having more power than a car i drive, netherless you'd have to pay me to drive one from boston to richmond, which is almost like 500 miles???

Unfortunately the Evo isn't sold in Canada...it doesn't meet some stupid bumper laws?? The Ralliart is the highest model available.

Thank you for letting them know our stupid Canadian safety standards Northern Maxima. And help her with payments..YAH RIGHT! I'm still going to university for like $6200 a year and working part-time in a Loblaws selling electronics...

I can't even touch the car because I totalled my 02 Grand Prix and my insurance sky rocketed.

Another Amen to that. Last night someone complimented me on my mostly stock '96 GXE. They had no idea that the car just turned 10 years old and has 210,000 miles! I have no intention of getting rid of this car anytime soon.
