EVAP system clogged with small black rocks (pieces of charcoal?)
I recently got the 0111 EVAP jackpot code. I'd reset the CEL, but it would keep coming back. So I tried diagosing the problem. Under the hood, I took apart the EVAP canister purge volume control valve (CPVCV) and the EVAP canister purge control valve (CPCV), and a lot of small black rocks came out of each. I'm assuming it's some of the smaller charcoal pieces from the EVAP charcoal canister from the rear of the car.
I shook out the small charcoal pieces from the CPVCV, and also found out that my CPCV was defective per the FSM, so I replaced it with a spare I had laying around. I reassembled everything thinking I had solved the problem.
Lo and behold, the 0111 code pops up again later that day. I took apart the CPVCV and CPCV, and again, there's all these black rocks inside them.
1) IS IT NORMAL FOR THESE SMALL CHARCOAL PIECES FROM UNDERNEATH THE REAR OF THE CAR TO MAKE THEIR WAY UP TO UNDER THE HOOD?
2) Is the charcoal canister defective?
3) Are these loose charcoal pieces possibly the sources of the 0111 code?

It sounds like you charcoal canistor is bad and falling apart. The FSM specifies a weight for the canistor, you may want to look that up and check it out - I hope those pellets haven't ruined other components in the system. I'd check the canistor first and then maybe back track along the lines trying to remove any debris.

Update: There's a TSB for 4th gens re: charcoal canister leakage on alldata. Unfortunately, you need a paid subscription to view it. Fortunately, I found the same TSB along with others on another website. No paid subscription needed!

0111 is the EVAP system "jackpot" code meaning it points or one or more components or the EVAP system system.
Possible causes include (BUT NOT LIMITED TO)...
- EVAP canister purge volume control solenoid valve stuck closed.
- EVAP control system pressure sensor and its circuit.
- Loose, disconnected, or improper connection of rubber tube.
- Blocked rubber tube.
- Blocked or bent rubber tube to MAP/BARO switch solenoid valve.
- Cracked EVAP canister.
- EVAP canister purge volume control solenoid valve.
- Closed Throttle Position Switch.
- Improper connection of one-way valve.
- Blocked purge port.
- EVAP canister vent control valve.
To begin, I recommend inspecting the charcoal canister for cracks, checking the EVAP lines for signs of charcoal (per the TSB, if there is charcoal in your lines, you should clean the lines and replace the charcoal canister), checking the various EVAP components for proper operation, & lubing the vent control valve with WD-40.
In my case, so far I've pinpointed 2 out of all the possible reasons...
1) My EVAP canister purge control valve was defective (fixed)
2) My EVAP charcoal canister is cracked internally and leaking charcoal into the EVAP system (need to get new canister).
