How much does getting an axle replaced cost?

I'm pretty sure my 95 Max needs a new pass. side axle. Its an auto, how much would this cost if I took it to a shop to have it done?

Call around and compair prices. We have no idea what the shops around you charge. What I usually do is call around to at least 5-6 shops and compair prices. I also look on line to see the best prices on the parts itself to see if I'm getting hosed on the mark up. It's tricky, because some shops will charge more for labor if you bring your own parts. Or you can be brave, read the "How To's", get the parts yourself, and dive in during a weekend.

I would consider doing it myself, but I'm pretty sure there are other problems that need to be fixed while the shop is fixing my car.

The best luck I've had with getting axles, bearings, etc. replaced has been with a LOCAL tire dealer/service center. I just had a front bearing replaced 3 weeks ago at a local tire service center for $50 labor plus cost of bearing (2 different tire centers gave me the same price) and I was in & out of there in an hour. I checked with 2 other regular auto mechanic shops that both quoted me about $160 for labor plus parts (I seriously doubt they have a hydraulic press). The tire centers also quoted me the same $50 labor cost for replacing the front axle. Just take notice of the tire centers that you know have been around a long time and go to them for a quote.

I picked up the part for $70 (remanufactured with warranty from a major chain auto store).

Labor was also about $70 (ask around, should be between $60-$90).

just a question but why would you ask orger's about something that a simple phone book and a few calls can answer? thats just like me starting a thread and asking how much do auto zone charge for there hood shocks instead of me calling auto zone and just asking the source.... a better thread would be how do i fix my axle or something in tha nature or if you called a few places and then started a thread saying i called and got qouted these prices did anyone do there axle and paid around these prices? (i left the oven on) my car is in the shop as we speak getting rebuilt tranny, both front wheel bearings replaced, and both axles replaced for $1000 bucks under the warranty though.
