tranny question

this only happens in 3rd and 4th gear but if im over 4,000 rpms and shift into 3rd it grinds a little bit and is kinda difficult to get into.....if im doing over 60 and downshift into 3rd then it grinds too...clutch is all the way to the floor....4th gear is the same thing...what can be the problem.?????? ALSOOO i went got my ecu scanned and code (PO0325) popped up and it says "Malfunction exists in the electrical circuit for knock sensor 1. ( Bank 1 or singe sensor) (Bank 1 identifies the location of cylinder #1, while bank 2 identifies the cylinders on the opposite bank" what does this mean and how the hell do i get it fixed....thanks a shiitload guys

For teh grinding, you syncro is screwed up. The codes, it is probably refering to cylinder 1, just replace it.

for the grinding, have your tranny fluid changed, and possibly go to a thinker gear oil (say GL4 or GL5, instead of GL3). Helped a ton on my 300zx.

For the knock sensor, do some tests, there is a good writeup in the "how to's"

If you have a gear lube that is too thick it will cause it to feel notchy, which is why redline is so good. It is a better viscosity and makes teh shifts smoother. Since it is actually grinding, I re-iterate the synchros.

Try this:

Go ahead and do your high rpm upshift but:

Push in clutch
release gear
go to neutral
wait a second
now move the lever to your desired gear

Does it grind now that you've waited about a second to let the revs drop?

synchros are little clutch-like devices that suppliments gear changes to allow for non-rev matched upshifts and downshifts (to a certain extent). They are located inbetween the gears in the transmission box.

www.howstuffworks.com can explain it to you with actual video demonstrations, its quite useful when trying to learn how a manual transmission operates.

reiterate means to say again; he's emphasizing his point to check your synchros.

You can buy a hanes manual for info on the synchro, but i was looking at ?pep boys? maybe autozone, i forget which website, but it looked like they had a copy of the manual online, just look for the part where they have recommendations and suggestions on how to fix the different parts of the car.

Well, to get to them you have to take out the tranny, to re-iterate them you just talk about them alot.

ive tried similar to that....i was on the highway going about 65 and i clutch to the floor i took it out of 5th and slowly put it in 3rd and it grinding a little bit but still went in but tiny bit more difficult than it would go into 3rd if i was just driving normally on the street....i tried this a bunch of times and it still does it and im pretty sure that it only grinds when my car is warmed up and i've been driving for awhile, not positive but pretttttty damn sure....but i'll try waiting a second or 2 between my shift tonite and tell u how it goes ...thanks alot man

I would skip the MT-90, and go straight to royal purple. In my Z, the mt-90 helped, but the royal purple damn near fixed the problem. MT-90 is gl-4 weight, and royal purple is gl-5 weight. If it is your synchros, then the heavier weight will extend their life.
