0407
Diagnostic Trouble Code 0407 indicates a malfunction was detected when...
A) 120 degree signal is not entered to ECM for the first few seconds during
engine cranking.
B) 120 degree signal is not entered to ECM during engine running.
C) 120 degree signal cycle excessively changes during engine running.

Possible causes...
- Harness or connectors
- Crankshaft Position Sensor (REF)
- Starter motor
- Starting system circuit

Perhaps a marginal starter would crank the engine at a non-uniform rate (fast-slow-fast-slow) and disrupt the normal rhythm of pulses from the CPS. This is consistent with the starter motor problems you have recently reported.

Replace the CPS. If the CPS is bad/not working, the car will not start. Get yourself a Haynes - it will help you locate these components.

It's a fault with the crank sensor or its wiring. Since I've been experimenting with the SMT-6 and messing with the crank signal I've come across this problem when the crank signal doesn't reach the ECU. You crank the engine a couple times and it doesn't start. Then after a few attempts the engine fires up but you get a check engine light with a 0407 code.

Since your the next town over I can come by to help if you need me to.
