Coil Spring Life Expectancy?

Was hoping that I might get some advice regarding coil spring replacement. What's the average life expectancy for coil springs in terms of miles?

You talking about the springs on your suspension? They will in theory get softer over time, but the effect is small and would take hundreds of thousands of miles to start to really show. Springs should last the life of the car if quality made. If you are asking about buying used springs then as long as there is no rust or anything else on them then I see no reason not to save some money.

Thanks for the responses. I have just over 158,000 miles on my '96 and am about to change the struts. I thought it might be the time to change the springs if I was going to do it....I guess I'll save the money for better use. Thanks again.

you could change the spring if you want to go lower but if not you'll be fine on stockies.

Personally I'd think about getting new springs. I have 210,000 miles on my stock GXE springs and man are they tired! The car just doesn't handle like it used to and if I could afford to spend money on an old car that would be the first thing I'd do. The struts are going on my dad's '02 SE and I'm trying to convince him to get a good set of springs while he's at it...

Springs should last the life of the car. It is the struts and shocks that wear out.

Well then here's a question. I had my stock struts replaced about 70,000 miles (3 and 1/2 years) ago with KYB GR2's. Do you think they're worn out already? I got 140,000 out of the original struts.

I think the springs are contributing to the soggy ride. The car can't hold corners like it used to and I'm thinking that a newer, stiffer, lower set of springs would really help out. Of course, if I got new springs I'd have to get struts, too, and I don't know if it's really worth doing anything fancy with such an old car. I just need her to get me through another two years of school.

I understand your point. A 1996 with 210 000 milles, might not be worth to change all 4 springs and shocks. How about maybe new performance sway bars? Those will keep the car from being soggy when cornering.

As a matter of fact I have 145000 km ( 90 00 milles) on my 98 GXE, I also felt my ride was getting sluggish. I also purchased some KYB GR2 as well. Just waiting for some available time to install them.
