Ok I have just been challenged by a friend with a Z28 Stock with an Auto trans. I have a stock 97 GLE no mods. I know i have a 190hp and he has a 310hp so i don't think i can beat him right now. I am planning to get a few mods like a VB, CAI, ypipe, exaust, etc. So what do i need to be able to beat him, without SC Turbo or Nos. Please post legit responses. THanks

Well, if it's a LS1, you won't beat with with out SC/Turbo/NOS.... sorry. Not close. With all the NA mods, in your auto, you'd be doing good running 15 flat. His auto without mods will run atlesat 14 flat.

It's pretty simple. Without boost or nos, you won't have a chance unless you completely rebuild the long block w/ all custom parts + an ecu reprogram. You at most will only get about 210-220hp at the very most. Still your 90hp short. Plus you still have an open differential and FWD.

Yup, I afraid it's true. You will lose unless you have a supercharger and/or nitrous. Even if with all the NA mods, I still don't think you can take him. Those suckers are fast, even in auto form. Even if you have a 5spd., it won't make any difference. Go race him for fun, but don't expect too much. You're best bet is to race against V6 models. It should be much closer and you might be able to beat one. I thought about getting a Z28 before, but it just wasn't for me. For one thing, the interior is so cheap looking and the realiability is questionable. However, if you just want speed, there's no better choice.

Like so many have posted here, it is no contest really. IMO it's not an even comparison kinda like apples to oranges. I drive my Maxima for it's comfort, reliability(sp?) and family outings. I drive my vette for performance, speed and low end grunt. They both have their pros and cons but are excellent cars in different ways. The drag strip is not where the max excels.

I wasn't bringing Don's maxima's speed into question. I was just stating my opinion of the comparison between a stock to slightly modded NA maxima to a Z28.

Sorry... I have to disagree from Personal Experience

Not to step on any toes or anything but how many of you have dared to step up to a light with a stock Z28? I took a '95 stock Z28 with my max with only an intake. Yea... I won by inches... but I still won... twice. He couldn't believe it but I could since I used to have a '95 Z28 with the 5.7liter Corvette engine. Its not always about the car. Its also about the driver behind the wheel. Any one who doesn't believe me can ask around. I got witnesses plus I still see this Z28 on DPA so if anyone wants to see it again... I can show you.

my friend got a LS1 Z28. he asked to see how fast his car is few days after he got the car. we both floored our cars as we lanched in a freeway, at the time he's at the top of a bridge, i was only halfway done.
u mite need both supercharge and nos to beat a Z28.
otherwise, just run for fun.

playing

They were definetly playing with you if you won at all especially in an auto. I raced some guy in a 60's corvette convertible standard on Boston Road one night. it was fun, he had the top down and i revved and was like why not. I kept with him through first and he hit second chirped a good chirp and it's like i stopped moving i couldn't believe it.

your right about the driver part but i think if its both are automatic cars and all u have to do is step on gas and pump it and maybe try to catch it at high rpms when the gears change, i dont think we can even start to compare with a z28 but yea if the driver sux and misses his gears ya anyone can win :-)

ok listen

take this into consideration ..
An auto, convertible Z28 will run high 13's ..
A 5spd hardtop Z28 will run mid 13's , i've seen them many times at the track ..if the driver is a idiot and can't shift they will still run high 14's

Basically , you have no chance

I think those Camaros definitely in another class when wanting to run against them. Anything can be done with resaerch and hard work but the 310HP makes it very easy to achieve high speeds quickly. I know a few Max's or I30's with SC's that can run with them but without it, I wouldn't even try. I'll race my stock Max against cars I know would be in my power speed range like the Ford Tuarus 24V(that was a joke if I ever saw one). I absolutely killed it off the line by 3 car lengths. When we got up to 80, I didn't pull on it anymore but it still couldn't pull up to me. Another funny race was when this woman tries to take me from a light with a Mitsu Galant. We take off and I hear her engine screaming for dear life and then I really got on it. I left her. The main thing is you have to pick your battles carefully. Try to take a Mustang 5.0. Some of the guys here have.

As far as daring enough to take on a Z28, I won't back down from anyone. So, I'll race it, even though I might lose. I know that many of you here feel the same way. I think you have more of a chance against older model Z28. However, like the newer Mustang GT, the newer Z28 is really fast. No chance whatsoever you can take one without sc/nos/major engine work. And that's a stock Z28, just imagine if it have a few mods. I agree that it's not a fair comparison. I think it's more of a fair comparison if you match a Z28 against a 300ZXTT. Many of us got a Maxima maybe because we want to be different. Look at all the fixed up Mustangs, Camaros, Civics, Integras, and Accords out there. Sure, there are many Maximas out there, but how many fixed up Maximas do you see on a daily basis? I would see a fixed up Maxima once upon a blue moon. So, even if you lose to a Z28, don't feel bad because we have two entirely different cars. Still though, I'm not saying don't race one. Race it anyway!

I own both a 97 max and a 99 Trans Am. The LS1 engines are usually underrated by the factory. I know some people that are putting down about 320+ to the rear wheels with a few simple mods. However, race the guy, have fun, be careful, you will probably not win but there is no harm in trying.

By the way, what year is the Z28? If it is before model year 1998 it has the LT1. I think about 270 hp from the factory. You may have more of a chance with one of those if it is not modded much. However, they are torque monsters and will easilly pull down low. Good Luck.

Well one of my friends got a 98 Trans Am, and I was able to beat him... BECAUSE he is brand new at driving stick.. So in this case, it wouldnt matter if he had a Ferrari 355 since he wasnt able to drive it, it wouldnt matter. However, as soon as he learns how to drive a stick, i'm staying away. I installed his stereo for him, and damn i thought the nissan interiors were bad.. the GM interiors are far worse.. Once he gets good, I'll just race him on my CBR600F4i...it can run low 10s straight out of the box.

I'm still undecided, i might not even have my Max then. I'm looking at 300ZX TT 5-spd right now but i might still come and with an open race invitation, hehe. And the 5.0's i beat where 5-spds and one was modded.
