Smog Blows
I hate stupid smog laws. they are the worst thing ever. Today I took my bros 98 max to do a smog check. So I take the car to this smog place to do a smog check for $50 with certificate. They hook up everything and the dude does not say anything about the short ram intake. The other place I took it too said they couldnt do a smog because of the intake which I think is just bs. So this guy hooks everything up and looks under the hood and under the car and everything checks out. He runs the test and the car passes the Emission Part of the test and the Visual Inspection but the Functional Check it FAILS. It says on the paper that it failed the MIL/CHECK ENGINE LIGHT part of the test when the MIL/ Check Engine Light is not on and the computer does not show any codes when I hooked up my scanner. I am thinking this guy did not hook up the Scanner to the OBD2 port to check for codes and that is why the car failed. Is that possible? The light turned on when we disconected the MAF sensor so everything checks out there. I think he just failed me on purpose. I am going to go try it again tomorrow. I just want to do this to that guy.
I don't understand why an intake would have anything to do with emissions testing. Granted I don't know anything about California emissions laws but I don't understand what an intake would have to do with it. If he's saying you've got a CEL and you don't have any codes, it's sounds like he's F'ing with you.
It has nothing to do with the CEL light. It has to do with the OBDII monitors. These monitors kick in under certain driving conditions and tell the computer that things are ok. This monitors have to be "Ready" in order for the car to pass the test. When I went through this, 3 of my monitors said that they were "Not Ready", the limit was 2. I ended up putting over 1500 miles on my car and still the darn monitors said "Not Ready". It was a major pain. Out of desperation I did what they tell you not to do. I reset my computer (at this point they all say not ready, and you start all over), and within a couple of weeks I took it back. At that point 2 still said that they were not ready, and since this was within the limits I passed.
The guys at the shop were pretty cool. I went there many times. I would pull in, and they would hook up their computer to the OBDII port. They would just tell me, keep driving. Give it a while longer and if things do not work out, do what I did. Good luck.

If our Governator (Arnold) has his way in California, the CARB agency will no longer exist in the next few years, as they are redundant with the state EPA.
If this becomes reality, it could be great for car tuners.
If the exhaust is clean enough to meet the standards, the car passes the smog test, no matter how heavily modified.
