16 MPG = bad KS?

alright this last tank (93 of course) i drove like my mom and probably never hit 0-30 faster than 5 seconds, with 33F/32R inflation tires, temps were 80 all week, plugs are like 6k old, but yeah, everything was in good shape, but as i did the math i got 16 mpg (206 miles on 12.8 gallons) but yeah, something is wrong. 121k miles, im guessing its the KS. where is a good place to find one ( and harness if it is needed) and is this MOST LIKELY the problem? thanks in advance guys

It might also be the o2 sensor. Why don't you drive to autozone and pull codes for free?

He could also just check the codes himself. It's pretty easy.

Here in California they do not do that service anymore. Some new legislation or something. We tried a few different places for my sister's 2000 Max and they all said that they are not allowed anymore.

There's a lot of things that could cause bad mileage. Have you changed the fuel filter lately?

Dragging brakes can also effect gas mileage.

Everything, as in: spark plugs, air filter, fuel filter, clean TB and IACV and so on and so forth? Also, how exactly are you figuring your gas mileage? What are your driving habits? No offense, but seeing your 16, I'm guessing this is your first car and you may have a lead foot. Driving style greatly affects gas mileage. Oh, hows your tire pressure? How about a stereo or something else heavy in your car. We need more information.

Were you running the air conditioning during the entire tank? If not, were you driving with the windows rolled down?

even with AC on full blast it would lower his gas milage that much. I've gotten excellent mpg on a 4 hr trip AC the whole way.

Air filter can give some pretty bad consuption, if not thats not it then . . .

I'm assuming your car is an automatic.

If it is and all those miles were in "stop-and-go" city driving, then I would not worry about it. Test it again, and I bet your mileage will be higher.

This time, however, you need to go at least 250 miles before filling it up. The further you drive, the less error there will in your calculations. I would also make sure that you only fill it up in the early morning when it is coolest and before the gas in your tank has had a chance to vaporize. You'd be surprised how much that built-up gas, vapor can throw off your calculations.

Going too slowly from a dead stop can also waste gas because (1) you use more gas accelerating in lower gears than cruising in high, and (2) you spend most of your gas trying to overcome the drag on your car that occurs at lower speeds.

In other words, if you are taking 5 seconds or longer to go from 0 to 30, you're wasting gas in the process!

I know I'm gonna get flamed by people but whatever. I used a bottle of Quakerstate FI cleaner into my tank and using 87 octane gas (ready to be burnt) I have over 300 miles on my tank. And I do mostly city driving too. Sometimes I drive like a granny...but with occassional lead footedness. Perhaps try a bottle of FI cleaner.

The KS can have a large adverse effect on the overall performance. You can bypass the KS with a 720k resisitor. There is a post somewhere in this forum about doing that. This is for only finding out whether it is the problem or not.

^^thanks ill try that on a ride or something, but yeah my car is competely stock, ive been maintaining it for a year between my dad getting his 04 and me getting my license all the while on the org, and i basically did the 60k service... but yeah i was exxagerating a bit with the 0-30 in 5 thing. of course i have a lead foot, but for this test i eased up a lot to try to get the best mileage. im testing again on this tank, and ill test the KS. are there any other symptoms of a bad KS? because now that i hear about "replaced my KS, hesitation gone" it sounds like my problem. im posting tired, so ill cut myself off now

With my a/c blasting nonstop I get 25-28 mpg on my 5 spd. Back when it was cooler and I didn't use the a/c I would get 34-42 mpg. And I don't drive like a granny
