"You blew out your exhaust padding" ????
Well I was at Atlanta Dragway watching these people I met hit the strip. After everything I showed them my poor 95 GLE. So I revved it up for them and they said it is raspy. SO I was like WTF no it isn't. So one of them got in my car and revved it and I almost wanted to die because of how horrible it sounded. Raspy as hell. Anyway it started blowing out exhaust gas (visibly). They were like, "The added PR CAI and the Budget-Y is taking in too much air for the stock exhaust system to handle. You blew all your padding out." They suggested changing my plugs and getting a cat-back to replace my poor stock exhaust. On a side note, it is all pretty well rusted, including the cat, and I did fail emissions ONLY over NOx. I never knew exhaust had "padding", but if this was the case then many others would have blown out their padding because I know others run a Y-Pipe alone. Let me know people and any recommendations on how to get rid of NOx would be nice. I have been told to clean out EGR and check for exhaust leaks. Thanks.

last time I checked, a y-pipe was part of the exhaust, and doesn't take in air, it only helps the flow of the exhaust. Hmm...exhaust padding..perhaps you should speak with people a bit more knowledgeable about cars. If your cat went bad, you would smell rotting eggs. Most likely the raspiness is from an exhaust leak caused by rust. The only "padding" I know of is exhaust wrap. Sounds like the people are full of crap. What kind of cars did they have?

exhaust padding is right up there with exhaust bearings.
The raspyness is probably from the flex section of your y-pipe. And the whole "sucking in too much air for your stock exhaust to handle" < laugh. If this was the case, wouldn't we gain more than 2hp from a cat back?

Padding meaning the steel wool in the muffler? But you said that its all rusted, so you are probably leaking exhaust all over the place. When its idling hop under there and see if you can hear it leaking. Y-pipe completely bolted up to the cat? Exhaust leak in resonator or back section? Screw it, you said it was rusted, looks like time to get a new cat and catback. A cat might help a little with NOx, I dont know Im not a mechanic, just wanted to post my 2 cents.

Thanks all. About the Y-pipe and exhaust thing, they were saying with the increased air intake from ... obviously ... the CAI and the increased air FLOW with the Budget-Y would be too much for the stock cat-back. Sadly it made sense to me. I will be going to the meet today for the SouthEast at 2 PM so they can hear it.
BTW they drive a 240 and a ... don't laugh ... Tiburon or as I like to call them, Tibs. The 240 was ridiculous. It was Turbo charged at 9 PSI only because his boost controller was broken that normally had him at 15 PSI. I am pretty sure he is running an SR20 engine too. I give the Tibs props because we did a 55-120 roll and we were perfectly neck and neck. The 240 wasn't even a chance ... as soon as we rolled he was gone. Then again I am only CAI and Budget-Y. The Tibs had cat-back I think and maybe a small thing here and there. Given a 00VI I would have schooled him like a little girl.

yeah, I went to the exhaust shop and he said I blew out all the ...well the word wasnt padding but it was sumtin, yeah, and it causes it to sound sputtery, i took it to get it inspected and the guy said there werent leaks anywhere on it he said it was just my muffler. plus, ever since i had bought that muffler, it made that sound. I'll take it somewhere else to get it looked at.

AH HA ... after reading a thread today it reminded me of the proper word. It is PACKING ... not padding. So what does it mean when you blow your packing out and is it caused from having an intake+Y-pipe which would permit too much air being forced down catback.
Well at least that was the story they gave me about it.
