does it start to crank? Can you hear the starter going? Have you pulled your spark plugs? Checked your coil packs? Check your TPS?

First my disclaimer: I'm a newbie so I'm aksing because I want to learn, not trying to prove that you're wrong (even though i think you are

How can it be the ignition switch, neutral safety switch, or the the battery if he says that it starts and then stalls?

Is your TPS out of wack?

Have you pulled a coil and checked that you are actually getting spark?

There are two (2) crank position sensors. Have you checked both of them?

Crank position REF is located just under the main drive pully.
Crank position POS is located on the transmission bell housing, under the car. If that sensor isn't giving the correct information to the ECU it causes a no start condition.

If your getting fuel (wet spark plugs) then the camshaft position sensor is working.

we checked all three sensors...

We swapped and cleaned the crank pulley sensor with mine and it still didnt work. Tried the CAM sensor the same way and it still didnt work. I removed the flywheel crank sensor and cleaned off all the metal and put it back, it still didnt start. I removed one of the spark plugs and rested it on the manifold to check for spark. It fires a spark but its almost random. I had the car cranked for a few seconds and it only sparked and sprayed once for that particular cylinder. Other times it sparked and sprayed a few times while trying to turn over.

Among other things checked were the ignition switch, anti theft relay, clutch interlock, starter, battery, TPS was measured, battery terminals were repalced, ECU wiring to and from crank/cam sensors were checked, neutral/reverse position switch is broken but I wired it to ground to make the ECU think its always in neutral, and removed the aftermarket alarm also checked to make sure the wires were all ok and brought back to stock condition.

Its funny if this engine had a distributor Id swear the firing order and/or timing is messed up.

Also tried a makeshift grounding kit with 14 gauge wire, whats funny is that even with two pieces of 14 gauge going to the sensor ground on the manifold to the battery the wires get warm when the car is cranking over...

Any codes on the ECU? You might have a bad computer

He had a o2 sensor code and a crank sensor code. The o2 won't effect starting and the crank sensor code went away after we swapped my good sensor onto his car. Whats weird is that with the crank sensor in my car it does not throw any codes. But my car is harder to start with the sensor in there.

We also swapped in my spare '96 ECU but that didnt seem to help at all.

Im totally out of ideas here I think he may have to bring it to Nissan.

It's got to be a crank sensor signal thats causing the no start condition. Purchase a NEW crank sensor (the one that threw the code) and I bet she starts right up.

The crank sensors control ignition timing, the cam angle sensor controls fuel delivery timing. All 3 work together to make your car start & run.

Hey i have an idea. It happened to my cousin in his 93 maxima. Check the fuel pump. Everything should work but the just wont turn on. Trurst me his car even got fuel, but we didnt believe the mechanic when he kept saying it was the fuel pump. Finally we changed it along with the fuel filter and the car turned on.

my car was doing this today after i had checked some fuses under the hood by the battery. somehow i put them back in the wrong spots even though there is a diagram on top of the box that shows where they go. i dont know if you messed with any of the fuses but after i fixed em the car fired right up. it was acting like it wasnt getting any gas and would just turn the motor over but no ignition. might be of some use for ya.

same problem here. have a 95 maxima, put a new motor in it from an infinity. ran mint for a few months. now it has a hell of a time starting. put a starter, plugs, tested the coils, new crank sensor, new cam sensor, now ignition switch. picked up a new fuel filter today with false hopes that will fix the problem. oh, and new grounds. im ready to throw a tire iron throught the windshield. sometimes it starts when i "trick" the starter by putting my foot on the gas a little and turning it over for just a few seconds. when its on a hill and i put it in second and pop the clutch it starts right up. also, if i spray starter fluid into the throttle body it will fire. speaking of fire, i should over insure the stupid thing and do just that. lol
