Code Reader Recommendations

Ready to purchase a code reader for the car. Can anyone provide info on what to look for or what kind to get, where?
Thanks.

you can pick one up at Advanced Auto. I forget who makes them, but they are orange handheld devices.

Actron makes them, But why spend the money when all you need is a flathead screwdriver to pull the codes from the ECU?

I knew that would be the next question! It's what I want, pure and simple. If any of the readers display numerical info, that would be even cooler (I saw a picture of one somewhere in the stickies, I believe). But, the bottom line is, I just want one...

This is what I use for my car. Just plug it in and read the number, look the number up in the provided code booklet. Clears codes also.

It would be nice to hook up a machine versus using a screw driver, or driving to an auto store, but honnestly I (knock on wood) dont have to check codes often enough to justify spending about $100. Good ole screw driver works just fine, or the auto store will scan and print for free.

i got the same exact one for my car a few months ago. might want to see if there are other auctions listed for that product, since i got mine for around $20 inc. shipping. worth the cost for the convenience factor, because i sure didn't want to spend $100 for a reader either.

Thanks! Now I need to find out if any of these programs work with a Pocket PC as opposed to Palm. This is just an option I'm thinking of. I have an old Compaq lap that's ready, willing and able if I get the software version....
