Boot and bearing question.

I was getting my wheels balanced today and the mechanic told me that my boot was blown and told me that I have to get it replaced before I mess up my front axle. Also he told me that usually these are caused by bad bearing so I should replace both at the same time, otherwise, I'll have a blown boot thing again.

(When the front wheels were off, there was grease all over the place and told me that this rubber thing (I don't know) is torn)

Ok so here's my question. When it comes to these axle type of mechanics, I know jack ****. He gave me a quote for $175 for each side (350 total) to replace all these... does this sound right?

WTF does a bad bearing have to do with a ripped CV boot.

1. Find a new mechanic.
2. Get under the car and see if there still a lot of grease left. If yes, you can get away with replacing just the boot. If the joint looks dry, then its time for new axles. Some people will recommend new axles regardless. Go to www.raxles.com, get a new axle and find a mechanic to put it in - should be 75 bucks or so to have the axle put in (and thats generous)... or do it yourself.

Cheers.

Well let me tell you that i just replaced my wife's axles on her maxima and this is a regular price, and if the boot it torn, replace the hole axle because the bearing are bad already, and let me tell you that to replace a boot, its about 60 bucks. Yea, its cheap and we could be like " yeaa, i just saved my self like a 100 bucks or so but guess what??? It's gonna tear again.... My friend to save him self some money he did the same thing.....Not worth it they ended up tearing again..So my personal advice if your gonna replace something do it right and you'l never have any problems again...

Maybe I should just take it to like Pepboys or something... at least they don't rip you off, trying to make more money for their company.
