Oil Cooler
Hey guys -
What is the benefit of an oil cooler ( please don't say that your oil will be cooler
)?
What do they cost? Easy to install? Worth the effort?
I say pics of a max with one and it got me wondering.
Thanks

At first I thought it was just a tranny cooler too, but this guy has a 5sp.

WEll I mean really the benifit of it is to cool the oil... The idea is to help prolong the life of the oil... and in racing applications, prevent oil from cooking.
If you have an auto, a tranny cooler is more useful.

Stillens is about $350.
Hayden makes one for around $80. But I understand there are issues with getting the oil filter to fit. It would be good if there is forced induction or the engine is run hard. Just helps keep the engine cooler, by spashing parts with cooler oil...

So, basically if your max is still NA then its kinda a waste of money?
Does anyone know off-hand where it picks the oil up and where it returns it to?

I think in general it comes with an adaptor I thinkt hat will go over the filter and that's where the oil is picked up and returned.

Oil Cooler sounds like a good idea
but I think it's something for people who race a bit.
It will prolong the life of the engine making it near immortal.
BUT - the engine runs at the temperature it does for a reason.
It may actually rob you of horsepower.
This is an actual potential problem -
Solution- just use good oil and spend the money on something like intake/exhuast. This will ease the physical restrictions and actually increase horsepower, mileage, and engine life since the VQ won't be gasping for air through a straw and trying to push it out a constrictive tailpipe.

Cool, thanks for the info guys.
I am not planning on getting one, I just saw one and it made me wonder.
Besides...I don't think high temperatures are really a problem in western New York, especially this time of year!

Most people think the weather or temperature where they live has something to do with engine temps. Not true. Living in NY or in Arizona doesn't make much difference, except for maybe a/c use. Using an oil cooler for the engine or the tranny will help extend its life. Putting an oil cooler on an n/a car will still extend the life of the engine. It's a necesity for s/c'ed maxs.

Has anyone used another oil cooler besides the Stillen?? i really really wanna get a cooler but dont wanna spend the money for the Stillen one. I know many companies make them but my problem is i dont wanna relocate the filter. Plus my front has no room to mount the cooler. Intercooler already takes up all of the bottom space of the bumper opening. I might have to get a small one and mount it up where the grille is. Thanks for nay help...
How does changing you oil and filter work after you install this
I'm interested in installing on, but I'm wondering what kinda of filter does it use. From my understanding, you use an adapter that plugs into the stock filter openning and hook up the cooler. A hose leads to the a remote filter and back to the filter openning. Is the remote filter expensive, or is the same filter size?

I race it, and drive it when I feel the need for speed.
