Starting Issue

Alright this is my buddies car...

When I turn the key, when the cars cold, it starts right up...after being warm it wont start...Its doesnt crank at all, or do nothing. All i get is noise from where the fuses are...but nothing from the engine at all...If i sit there for long enough I can get it crank over, If I keep trying

Fairly New Battary so I dont think its the battary, and the starter was not original but I think that was the problem...I ordered a Junkyard starter to maybe rule that out, and its doing the same thing...I maybe think the starter isnt working once the starter gets hot ?? I believe thats the problem

Anyone have any ideas ??

Sounds like starter... Strange that heat would do this though...

Well that may just be a coinsidence....the thing is, the car is not cranking or anything...nothing...just the noise coming from the fuse area...

Well the clicking means its not the ignition switch. Its gotta be the starter. Perhaps the junk yard starter was equally as bad as the other one. As strange as it seems, when I was having trouble starting, I narrowed it down to the fuel pump. Well, I replaced the fuel pump with a non oem one and I still had the same problem. After running around in circles, I came back to the fuel pump put in a nissan one and BAM, problem fixed!!

Seems like alot of people are having starter problems lately. You could check and make sure the electrical connections to the starters are clean. I've been making it a habit to clean all contact points with a dremel when I do anything electrical to my car. All the flaws of a contact arises when the point is heated up, so try that. This is just an idea to run with if you haven't tried already.

He's not getting the clicking only some noise from the fuse area.

Replace the ignition switch, strange enough it seems they start to show signs of failure when it's hot. It's a common failure item lately on here. Search back a few pages and you'll find quite a few posts on ignition switch failures.

Good luck Matt!

Ignition switch seems to be a very common problem in 4th gens. From my findings, the stock solder or something inside the ignition switch starts to lose it's connection and creates something similar to an electrical short (rather something short of a short). When it's cold, there is more moisture in the air and moisture condensed on stuff. Because of the increased moisture, the electrical current is better able to travel through the air and such therefore starting easier. When it warms up the moisture evaporates and blah blah u can figure out the rest. Starters are generally never the first problem when it comes to a max that doesnt want to start.

Did you have to take the wheel off to get at the switch?

Unless Im reading the Hanyes manual wrong it says you have to do this.

I have been putting off doing the ign switch for this reason.....
