tie-rod boots

Anyone changed the tie rod boots? I just noticed mine are broken open. Is it a hard repair? Do I have to change anything else while I'm at it? The car turns fine and has no noises.

You'll have to remove the outer tie-rod end to get to the boot off the car... while you are at it, it might be a good time to just replace the inner/outer tie-rod ends...

nj to the rescue again. Looking over the Haynes manual I guess i don't have to take apart the Wheel bearing or CV joint, right? Also, what kind of grease do you use in the boot? How much are you suppose to pile in there?

I just used synthetic all-purpose grease... not a lot - just enough to cover the joint.

Don't have to take anything apart at all - just loosen the locking nut against the outer- tie-rod, use a puller to pop the tie-rod out of the steering knuckle, unscrew the outer tie-rod end off, and then remove the two clamps holding the boot on, pull off the boot.

As already mentioned - it might be a good time to swap out the inner and outer tie rod ends..

Thanks nj. I'll look into the pricing of changing the tie-rod ends as well as the boot. I've got too much going on with this car right now. The minute I fix one thing I find something else.

Look on Ebay - for a seller named - pedro-r - he has inner/outer tie rod ends as well as control arms, sway bar end links, etc. Good prices too (he's getting a little abusive on the shipping). Another guy, local on the org, so I supoprt him is Brian - PM internetautomar (its not a typo)... he can hook you up with whatever you need.

My boots were in good shape, so I never had to find a source for those... a dealer may be the best bet for that.

The dealer sells just the boots and KYB has boots for sale aswell. My boot is also torn but i'll just go and replace the entire suspension with illuminas and either h&r springs or h-techs. I'm just not sure if i should replace anything else other the the struts, springs, boots, and my front bushings.
