Muffler or cat?

I just started to hear some noise comming from under my car, it sounds like I have a hole in my muffler. When i go up hills i hear a rattle under my car too, is that the cat? I got under it today and it sounded like the noise was comming from the middle of the exhaust system and not the muffler. Tell me what you guys think!

THANKS
Walshy

It can be lots of things that someone would need to look at to tell you. Off the top of my dumb head it could be

1) pipe- broken, rusted, bent
2) flange
3) a broken exhaust mount/bushing
4) loose heat shield
5) broken heat shield
6) Anything else under the car

We cant tell on the internet dude. Most muffler shops will put it up on a lift and give you an estimate for free. Take the estimate and do it yourself.

If you get close enough and listen carefully you should be able to pin point where it is. Is it the stock exhaust? Only other thing is the resonator. Looking at the exhaust it looks like the cat is in the middle of the exhaust, I may be wrong though. Maybe that cool shield thing on the thing i think is the cat is loose or rattling?

yea it is still stock exhaust. It definetly is comming from the middle somewhere. So you think the cat or the resonator? Whatever the problem is its getting louder, so ill be checking it out tommorow and see whats up.

Maybe even check for leaks, just run your hand down the pipe, not on it obviously. If you hear a constant puff puff puff noise there is a hole somewhere. Rattling I'd guess to be the cat.

Best advise you could get ... Take it somewhere. There are many different things that could be leaking. My 97SE is leaking from the rear flange before the muffler. If you can get it high enough to get under there you should be able to pin point where it is coming from.

I had exhaust midpipe on my 96 GXE replaced today by local repair shop ($300). Six months prior I had my muffler replaced including muffler hanger. Had to have it looked at because the rattling and strange noise underneath my car while driving was driving me insane! Its a good chance that your exaust needs a few replacements.

Drive your car up on ramps and check out the situation.

I haven't had any good experiences with the cherry bomb as a main muffler. It works as a cheap resonator.

Depends what you're looking for with sound. I like the car to have a nice rumble without waking up the neighbors.

The dynomax super turbo and 2.5" pipe worked for me on my maximas. Now that I have an I30 I want silence. Maybe i'm getting old.

thats what the turbo II is like. at least it has baffles while maintaining performance (i.e. no resriction). i bought my max with a gay *** fart cannon, then cut it off and put this on, its like silent now. well, silent at cruising speeds, but then again, i dont have a y-pipe yet. i ordered my cattman y and its on backorder for like 4 weeks.

i wanted silence too. maybe i'm getting old too
