Off the line
My 95 stock Maxima (like all of yours) has a demon engine. Whenever I pull up to the line and some crappy Honda wants to go, there's nothing better than humbling his sorry a$$. But when it comes to other vehicles, at the line I get my a$$ kicked, but I usually catch up will sheer power. What can I put on my car to take off at the line?

I could've kept up with this C240 Kompressor most likely manual (Cause I heard a bad shift...his lane was cutting) but at the time I was low on gas and using regular so I had to let go and besides we were on a 60km/h street. I cannot be caught speeding since I still have a careless driving case after totalling my Grand Prix.
But the moral of the story is...just keep your TB cleaned, oil nice and clean, I prefer some FI cleaners once in a while, and if you can afford some mods do it. If you're like me whose going to post secondary education and can't afford it....Rely on you reaction time.

Like 86 said, the high flow cat is worthless unless yer lookin for obnoxious sound. 0-1 hp gain tops.
BUT, how about headers? If one was going to go with an aftermarket y-pipe, is it worthwhile (money/hp wise) to go with headers, also??

Thanks for the help. I've also noticed that most, if not all Nissan cars are best at a 10mph roll. I beat (more like spanked ) a WRX Impreza STI that way I lost him in a curve. It felt soo good to flash those hazards in triumph.

how many miles on your car? thats a good start
why mod your car, if your not changing out the old parts in your car thats killing your hp or maintaining it? eg. spark plugs, fuel filter, take out injectors to be cleaned, coilpacks, change oil, tranny flush ks, o2 sensors, clean air filter, etc and get a compression check first

Ok, let's see. VQ in '96 had 190hp and around 205-210tq stock. The Subaru boxer in the STi has 300 DO YOU HEAR ME 300 horses and 300 DO YOU HEAR ME 300 lbs of tq. The '96 VQ even boosted about 8 will top off around 325hp or so. But all that info is given so I dont know why i made my poor fingers work.
Anyway, on topic. If you want off the line I think a CAI would benefit cause of the great low end gains: the length of the tube holds air at a stand still so when you force the butterfly plate open, there is a small amount of pressure inside the CAI tube therefore creating a mini boost. Problem is, higher up you will lose some numbers. I would also recommend a SC. That is, if you have the money, and if ur in cali, stupid enough.

He must have f***ed up because we were going at it at I started closing in on his right. Then he slowed all of a sudden like dramatically slowed down and I accelerated on the inside of a curve and say him far behind me. That's when I hit the hazards.

Sounds like he took his foot off the gas to avoid the boyracer behind him

Seriously guys. I'm not kidding on this one. Could it be possible that he realized he was up against a far superior vehicle. Honestly I think he had to turn or something. But I did catch up to him eventually overtook him.

i'd say that the sti didn't want to race. i usually do that with lil civics. i give them a run for it...n then i slow down cause i dun want ne tickets. also, i usually stop "showing off" when the civics pull something on the highway which i think was ridiculous to do n can end up in a really bad accident. there's nothing more to your conscience than knowing because of you racing another car, the other car decided to pull something stupid n crash into a minivan where this little girl was just sitting there singing sing-alongs with the mom...remember, that could of been avoided by YOU even tho you weren't the one to crash. by simply letting go of the gas, he prob wouldn't of done that crazy stunt to try n beat you, n the accident wouldn't of been caused by you. thank god noone was badly hurt, but i totalled my accord sort of in the same way.
dun get me wrong, i took another max out the other day on a turn, he had to slow down cause otherwise he would of crashed on the turn, but hey, there was noone on the road or on the side of either of us since the turn swas an on-ramp...to the turnpike -= )

or he has a knock off body kit to make it look like he has one. remember that the STi gets 4.9's, and a 5spd 95/96 gets 6.6 and you have an auto. so you are even slower. if you havent get teh vb mod. dont know what it is and dont care cus i have stick.

This thread is a classic ... It's filled with the most BS and misinformation I;ve seen in a a long time ...
And truthfully, the only way to get significantaly better off the line would be what the 2 fellas that joined in Dec. 2000 stated or a combonation of the 2 ideas provided.. That's all there is to it .... I'm sorry, but the rest of you guys are a bunch of res
And since this is turning into a stupid debate about an STi ... it only shows more ignorance.

What other mods can you list that is effective getting a car off-line than a higher stall TC? I took the original post as off-line only, not anything that happens right after launching.
A Y-pipe doesn't improve your 60ft time. An Intake doesn't improve your 60ft time. A B-pipe doesn't improve your 60ft time. A UDP doesn't improve your 60ft time. Headers don't improve your 60ft time. None of those produce effective results from 0-25mph like a higher stall TC can. I guess the only other thing would be weight reduction, FI, gripper tires, or Nitrous.

forced induction would not really help off the line. turbo def. not. if you had a small enough turbo to get results off the line, it would be completely worthless and to ineffecient above ~3k. a super might do it, but the higher rpm, the more power you should get, so that also means it wouldnt help much off the line. which leaves the diff. TC as a good option because its the same logic as a LW flywheel.

Roots type would, since it's all about intake charge velocity, and OHV does "off the line" a little bit better than DOHC, no matter what the displacement.
N2O off the line, and a turbo after that would be good too (common practice)
The 1.8t has great off the line but does after ~5.5k .. your 3k is a bit of an exageration. But No MAxima, No care I know ...
But here we go again, splitting hairs
