Electrical: Turn key and nothing.

Alright. Two weeks ago, I installed my new Deatschwerks injectors and messed that install up and had to redo it. During that install, I had to turn over the car a lot. When I started having a starting problem last week, I figured it was one of two things, the starter or the battery. I got a new starter and had my battery checked and recharged. It worked fine yesterday after I had to swap in the new started and it was fine driving around town this morning. I go to run some errands this afternoon and try to turn it over and nothing.

It seems like the battery gets zapped every time I turn the ignition. Does anyone have an idea of what I can check to try and diagnose my problem? I looked at the FSM, but it doesn't seem like there is any answers for me there. Dave Sz told me to check ignition, but I have not fiddled with anything dealing with the ignition.

It might be the Ignition switch. When you turn the key do the dash lights come on like they should?

Yup - sounds like a dead ignition switch to me... I have an old one that works 99% of the time - you are welcome to it... shoot me a PM. (I'll have to dig around the garage for it).

Dont even bother getting that...spend $25 at Nissan and buy a new one

I installed one on my buddies car last week....took like 30 min to start the car every time...replaced starter and battary, and still did it...spent $30 at the local auto parts store, starts every single time now

**UPDATE**

Installed Nirav's ignition switch and the car worked fine for a couple of days, but tonite...

On the way to the Bear's/Brown's game, it died about a mile from my house. I thought nothing of it. It started up fine and just trucked along in bumper tobumper traffic. I was looking at my idle and it was fine, but my vacuum and egt were off. I was seeing may -15 in/hg vacuum which is way low and 300 C for egt, which is high for me. Outside temps were around 80-85.

So for those of you who don't know, Soldier Field is downtown Chicago on Lake Michigan and the traffic is ridiculous at rush hour (it was a 7 pm game.) I was on Congress Pkwy. which is one of the main arteries to Lake Shore drive. Needless to say, the car shut off. When I tried to start it again, it was having the same symptoms as before, but this time jumping it wouldn't help. I had to flag someone down in traffic to give me one. At least my battery is in the trunk. The wierd thing is that when I put the hazards on, it made a buzzing noise from the steering column. So after about 50 minutes with Bear's fans honking at me and flicking me off, I was just playing around with my headlights and they worked. So I tried to start it again and that worked too.

I'm a little confused. I will go to the dealer tomorrow and get a new one.

Ah sh*t - we jinxed it! Well, hopefully a new ignition switch will fix the problem... The one I gave you was working perfectly in my car - and so I doubt it will be the root of your problems... especially since your car died while already running... the ignition switch doesn't do anything once the car has been started... keep us posted.

one thing you might wanna think about...i know that when i reinstalled my starter, i didnt tightly clamp done my power/ground terminals on my battery. i tried to turn it over, and i would get a small spark, and then nothing...vehicle must be smart enough to turn itself off when it experiences high current draw...tightened down my battery connections and i was golden.
