Exhaust too loud!
Exhaust too loud!
I hope you guys can help me out. I have a '97 automatic which I just bought the cattman cat-back to add on to my warpspeed y-pipe, but it's too loud. Especially where I live is real quiet at nights so veryone will know when I'm home. I need to get something that looks good but with a nice low sound. Can you post suggestion or post video you have of your exhaust model and how it sounds. I like the feel of the cattman though...real sweet. I just had it put on yesterday now I'm taking it off. If I don't get any feed back, I'll just have to go back stock because I don't want to put the guys at Sportscompact through too much trouble.
Thanks!
Thanks!

its most likey due to the y-pipe. i have an aluminized y-pipe CM straight pipe resonated and the apexi ws2 exhaust and its pretty freaken loud. kinda like those phoney ponies w/ v8 exhausts but little quieter

I'm in the same boat as you. My 96 has a custom 2.5" bpipe with a Apexi WS knockoff muffler. I installed my Budget Ypipe yesterday dear god is it loud, raspy, and pop. Will probably have to look into a resonator and possibly a new muffler lol.
I suggest a 3.5 Altima muffler I'd say its quiet and probably will sound good.

that's a pretty good idea. I'm still speaking with the guys @ sportscompact. Apparently I wont be able to return it so if any one is interested drop me a line @hotsteppa68@hotmail.com. By itself it seems pretty quiet...definetly looks good.
I dont know if this will help ur situation or if you have already checked for this but make sure there are no leaks any where. One of my cat gaskets broke down from warped flanges now I have a leak = very loud. This has happened to me before and when i fix the leak exhaust sounds great nice low hum at low rpm not loud at all. Of course when I stomp on it its loud, but to be expected. BTW, budget y, oem cat, greddy sp2 catback.

Give it about a week or so and it will quiet down. I have the cattman catback with y-pipe and stock cat and at first it was really loud. After about 100-200 miles, it quieted down a great deal. Give it a try for just a little longer before you get rid of it. I really love mine.

hey 98MistSE and 99automatic thanks for both your imputs. The only thing is , and not to soound sarcastic, but are you guys sure it's not a matter of you both getting used the sound. Because if that's true and if there is anyway I could actually hear one, I would keep the system...I really like the look and the power increase.

Nah man, I'm positive new exhaust systems get quieter over time.
It happens with every new exhaust. I have no idea what causes this, but it's a normal thing. The sound decrease is enough that you can actually notice the difference with naked ears.

getting a y-pipe
new to this...need something cleared up. I have a 96 max, the mechanic told me i need a converter assembly done. There is a part of the pipe near the front of the assembly that has a leak and is sucking in too much O2 (hence the check eng. light). This tells me i need the pre cat put in from the factory to be replaced, not the actual cat, since its further back on the pipe, and sounds fine. My question is this...i plan on getting a warpspeed Y-pipe...what does this include? does it stope before the cat, is it the whole exhaust system? what do i get? whats a website to order it from...should i tell my mechanic to order it himself?
also can someone tell me how i can change my interior panel lighting...its pretty dull on the instrument panel...i am wondering if i can change color and its intensity.

Check all the stickies, it will explain the basics of your car. Don't do anything to your car OR run to a mechanic til you do. It might save you some money.

that is true what S Cranaw says. I which I had a manual gear box...it would sound nice. I think that's the biggest thing thats bothering me...the sound on an automatic. It would sound alot better on a stick.

I am definitely sure that it is not me just getting used to it. On the highway I cruise at between 60-80 which is about 2.5-3k rpm and it is very quiet. The only time it gets a little loud is when I start going up a hill and it puts a load on the engine. I just downshift to 4th and it goes away.

ya its fine, its might sound loud by the car but when going slow it wont wake up the hood unless you red line in park sitting in the drive way.
