The knock sensor is like a sensitivity control for you're alarm. Like if the windows are broken by a thief, and the knock sensor is messed up the alarm won't go off. If you don't have a factory alarm, don't worry about it. Its located in the trunk on the passenger side rear 1/4 panel under the grey cover near the antenna. Hope this helps.

All you guys telling him that it detects knock need to get real. We all know vq's are bullet proof and never knock, go ahead and use 87 octane in it, it will have NO adverse affects what so ever!

a knock sensor is a piezoelectric crystal. it produces its own voltage. the pcm uses prom to determine what the voltages mean from the sensor. normally, the pcm will advance the timing until the knock sensor detects knocks, and then the pcm will slightly retard the timing.

231,000 miles. 87 Octane used 90% of the time. My light has only lit up once for a bad O2 sensor. I have a knock sensor code, that I probably had since I bought the car used.
What adverse effects are you speaking of?

best deal is to get it swapped out soon. 4th gen max's are known for the infamous knock code.

Yeah. I will. I just get so tired of the infamous octane debate. We all KNOW what the car was designed to run on. There are arguements for and against it and the owner's wallet is going to have the final say.

It's your car, and you're free to believe in either side of that endless debate. All i know is that is recommended in our manual, and i have felt the difference between both. Therefore, I will throw out pennies to pay for premium

Speak for yourself, man. It's all relative, and everyone's circumstances are different. The prices make a difference to ME.

In a nut shell.... it adjust the engines timing... if u are using low octane fuel it will retard the timing so that premature detonation wont occur...
