transmision gasket leak

transmision gasket leak

i went to go and change my oil and i noticed the gasket on my trannny leaking i called up the local tranny shop and they gave me an estimate of 158 dollars is that a reasonable price

What tranny gasket are you talking about? also 5spd or auto?

i have a 89 auto and had a gasket leak a while back, the part it self was only 58 dollars but the labor was 650

lol that is a rip man, that gasket is not what is leaking. I bet its a main seal.

There is NO tranny pan gasket on the 5spd tranmissions...There is NO pan...its probably the your park/neutral switch leaking and thats what there gonna replace

yea my dad doesnt know what hes talkin about personally i dont know much about the max yet i just picked it up.

I agree with matty that switch leaking tends to be a pretty common problem on 5 speed maximas. Mine leaks as well and I drained my gear oil only a few weeks ago and attempted to seal the switch but it still leaks. On a weekend where I have a lot of free time I'm going to replace the switch as well as drop the entire tranny, pull it apart, clean it out really nice, and re-seal it. $158 is certainly resonable if the switch is being replaced though especially because that part alone is around $50 I believe. Then when you tack an hour or so labor onto that you're right in the ballpark.
