I want to increase the performance of my car but I do not want it to be ridiculously loud. My stock ypipe is rusted so I need to decide whether to get another stock pipe or get a performance ypipe. If you know a good ypipe let me know too thanks.

 

Get a used stock y-pipe for cheap, get a new one for alot more, or get a after market y-pipe for less than the price of a new stock Y-pipe and gain a significant amount of power over stock. Your choice. The after market will be a little louder, but still very close to stock lvls if you are not upgrading your cat-back as well. Upgraded cat-backs tend to be louder with a AF Y-pipe, but replacing any exhaust part with anything other than stock increases the sound lvl.

The only time you'll hear a difference is under heavy acceleration. It's a great mod in terms of power per $.

 

the y pipe is not loud at all, if you get it i bet you wont even notice it only if you really listen for it

 

i have had budget on mine for about 6 months. and from day 1, i loved the slight growl increase in sound. under WOT, it sounds even meaner, but nothing annoying at all. cruising, i hardly notice it is there, unless i drop to 3rd to make a pass!! damn, then I KNOW it's there. definitely not worth it to go OEM when there are aftermarket ones out there for the same $$ and way less than new OEM.

I installed my Topspeed y today finally . Stainless steel and sounds great, a bit more aggressive than stock with the butt dyno to prove it. Had to cut one of the bolts off which sucked but all in all a y pipe is a good upgrade. If you decide to go stock pm me, I have one sitting in the back seat!!

 

if you have the stock exhaust, the only time you'll hear about the new y-pipe is only a WOT or when you're coming to a stop sign when reducing rpm...(like under 1500 rpm) it makes a loud growl but nothing to disturb anyone's mind! sounds really cool and gives a lot of power!

I have a y-pipe question, is the cattman y-pipe worth it? it's a lot more than others such as warpspeed and budget, but is it really worth that much more as far as gains/quality/noise goes?

 

I have the Cattman Y on mine. Gains are no better or worse than any other y-pipe. Neither is the noise. The quality is pretty damn good in my opinion. But the nice welds, fit, and finish is admired when you take it out of the box. That is the last time you'll care about it since it's tucked under your car. And these reports of "bees in a can" sound, can be developed by any Y-pipe from any brand. Depends on how long your flex section lasts. I have yet to hear of a Cattman doing so, but you never know. My flex section is getting a bit rusty around the welds for the flex, so I may have the same problem in the future. Worth it? Come to think of it, I dunno if it actually was. It was damn pretty when it came out the box though. This is the only Y-pipe I ever tried so I couldn't comment on the others. I figure all the y-pipes out there will give similar gains, similar sounds, and similar problems.

 

get an aftermarket y pipe (warpspeed) and keep the rest stock !

 

y-pipe sucks no gain at all . maybe 3-4 hp only in reverse... you would do better with a ebay module resistor with the 20 hp gain. j/k

 

The low end is still there, much of the back-pressure is gone. Especially noticable in 5spd...

I totally agree. I have a Cattman too. All I would like to add is that considering you live in PA, I would recommend getting a SS y-pipe so it lasts longer, and it will be quiter than the non-SS y-pipes out there. Be warry of Budget, there have been several threads lately discussing the poor quality/craftsmenship. On the other hand, others are happy with their Budget y's. Conclusion: you just don't know what you're going to get with them, so choose wisely! Search and you'll see. If you care about craftsmanship/good welds, then Cattman wins hands down. I've personally seen a Budget and a Warpspeed.

And like the others said, as long as you keep the stock exhaust (cat back) you won't hear the aftermarket y-pipe.

 

Ya with a stock catback you shouldn't notice a big difference in sound levels. But you should get a nice growl. If you get an aftermarket cat-back make sure that you get it with a resonator so it stays quiet.

 

Wut about the headers/ypipe from cattman found from custommaxima.com? I thought they didnt make headers for our generation maximas?

 

I have a stainless steel Budget y-pipe bought in June 2004 and highly recommend it. It has made a noticeable improvement in butt dyno. I have a 5-speed and particularly notice the difference above 4K at WOT. I have mine coupled with a K&N panel filter.

I was concerned about noise. At idle or cruising I notice absolutely no sound difference over stock. At WOT, I notice a bit of a growl which I quite like.

Phone Budget and tell them you will not tolerate any problems with workmanship and expect the y-pipe to be thoroughly inspected prior to shipping and you will return it at their expense if you are not satisfied with the workmanship. See what they say.

Mine was perfect but there were some problems a couple of months ago that hopefully have since been resolved. Buy stainless steel only, where you live.

 

There are Stone Racing Headers and Cattman Headers for our 4th gens. Both of them can only provide but 3-5 HP. Only reason for getting headers on our cars is if you are going forced induction.

 

I just bought the budget y-pipe, I'll tell you what I think this weekend.

 

i dont really feel anything, then again i havent driven my car in 2 and a half weeks before installing it.

 

tell you the truth..when people say that there's a growl..its not really a growl..more like a purr....on a serious note..i think my cell fone rings louder than my y-pipe....tell u the truth...i don't think it makes a sound at all....

 

Man i highly recommend you the Warpspeed Y pipe, its $199 + shipping; and you will FEEL the imporvement right away. I have one on my max and i can tell ya this is the most effective bolt on also known as best bang-for-the-buck. No bees in a can for sure, and you can order stainless steel if you want for 50 bucks more (i didnt cause the flex section is made of stainless steel in both versions of the y pipe: alumnized & SS304)
